Problem selecting 1st and 2nd

Hello, My 74 911 just developed this problem with no warning, just all of a sudden.
I was driving the car and it was shifting fine, then something went wrong, now when I select 1st gear, I get 3rd. when I select 2nd gear I get 4th. 3rd and 4th gates still work fine, but when I select 1st and 2nd gate I get 3rd and 4th gear instead. Some times (maybe 1 out of ten) I get 1st and then it shifts into 2nd no problem and then into 3rd no problem and then 4th, but when I try to get back to 1st, 2nd gate, I am still stuck in 3rd 4th gate.

Maybe this has already been discussed, if so please direct me to the solution.

Thanks, Scott

Sounds like the shift coupler in the tunnel behind the front seats has come loose.
Pull inspection plate and check. Has the linkage been adjusted in recent times?

That would be the first thing to check for sure. Maybe loose or the bushings are all shot out. Easy , inexpensive fix. Let us know what you find out.

I had a similar issue, it turned out the joint on the shifter shaft below the stick its self, was cracked, here is the thread of the issue

1978 911SC Shift linkage question

Sounds like it is the coupler for you, or the bushings in it. They are easy to replace, some where on here is a tutorial of how to realign the shifter as well it is quite useful.

Best
Dave
