is 6" enough, i have 11"... my wife and most of the guys say its too much?(pics)
![]() ![]() i cut and welded the stock sc muffler up with some galvanized fence post from home depot. i saw in the instrucitonal thread that 6" is the correct length, but i kinda like the longer pipes. my bride and a couple of the pcar neighbors think they are too long and should be cut back. any ideas on how that will effect the tone. it sounds ok, but i would prefer a deeper more throaty exhaust note.

that is so funny you should say that.
i have at least three small gashes in my shins from looking at the workbench and walking behind the car.

Just wait until you do that when the pipes are still HOT!!!
All kidding aside.... Long pipes help with torque and keeping the decibels down. But shorter pipes look a bit better and are easier to live with (shins, etc).

You could go longer, but you'd have to put these on (also might help with the shin skin )
![]() edit: referring to the tail pipes... not Joe Bob's unit!

Since we are discussing aesthetics (and practical shin protection) I’ll weigh in with an opinion.
My eye likes exhaust that is short, almost ‘hidden’ under the rear with large diameter and something ‘interesting’ (like cookie-cutters or an ‘eye-brow’). It is as if you are trying to hide something - usually there is something substantial under there. Porsche did this with a very modest, slight down-angle exhaust tip with a little ‘reinforcing’ lip. I have always been somewhat surprised that the 911 didn’t originally have dual outlets with the second a mirror image of the existing one. I have always rationalized it as sound-level engineering, given the internal complexity of the muffler. Keep in mind, these are trying to replicate the idea of the 911R exhaust with very short megaphones through the ‘muffler’ with cookie-cutter ends. If there is a bit of exhaust soot on the paint, that is aerodynamics. Long, skinny (or fat) pipes way out the back are … well … inappropriate to my eye. You are never quite sure if they are drooping and will scrape the ground or erect with a slight up-angle (to continue the Freudian theme). Then there is the shin issue. I’m a “Form follows function” type guy. Best, Grady

In my experience, even eight inches gets the job done!

I suspect you may face some legal issues... Imagine what would happen is someone get burnt on your pipes after you just parked and those things are still hot. Imagine what would happen if that someone is a child...
This was assuming your car is a DD. Now if you only trailer and track it then the issue is moot.

Having had pee shooters, zoomies, trailer hitches and many other thingies that stick out.....I have hit every damn one of them. Got the scars to prove.
Like Grady, I like tucked under outlets. My current ride doesn't even have a mufler, just a sport cat and a nice 3 inch bezel welded to the outlet. ![]()
