I used FedEx freight to ship a motor from Boston to Seattle. I think it ran about $250. Nothing special for packaging; PO just strapped it to a pallet and shrink wrapped everything.

I built a box. Shopped around for cheap shipping. There are lots of deals in this economy.

For no good reason, here's a video of a 911 engine going into my old Jeep.

shipping

I've posted my shipping need on uship.com, sort of an ebay for shipping companies. Four engines and I've been satisfied with each shipper. I have a long uphill driveway, and they all hauled it up or down on a hand dolly and no complaints or extra charges. My cost for transcontinental has been in the $250 range... but also had to pay the same for half the distance. I think its about the lowest profitable range.

I used UPS once to ship a tranny, They dropped it and broke it but their insurance bought me a new one. You could try a company like freightquote. They have a website that gives quotes from multiple carriers. They can also recommend one based on what your shipping and the reputation of the carrier. I recommend securing it WELL to a pallet with do not stack labels on top. Freight will be moved many times in and out of trucks by lunatics on forklifts in the course of its journey. Anythings loose or poorly fastened will probably be missing and theres a good chance it will be rammed by something at least a couple times. If you can pick up and deliver to a business dock it will be cheaper than a residential delivery. If you don't have a dock they may have to use a special truck with a lift gate which costs more and usually adds time because that special truck doesn't have a normal route. Weight effects price but equally does class and size.
