Wild stab in the dark....

I don't see a distributor or spark plug wires, plus, the cooling looks formidible.

I'm guessing it's a marine diesel.



Maybe it could also be a military heavy duty truck or tank motor?

Dan got it pretty close.
It is a Komatsu diesel engine. It is actually very large.
It was in the lobby when I visited Komatsu last week in Oyama.
I'm not sure about the application, but some of their more modern flat engines were for locomotives. They fit down between the wheels right above the tracks.

Funy thing about locomotive engines.... both Germany and Russia used locomotive diesel engines to power their submarines.

If I had to hazard a guess as to purpose, it would have been in a place that demanded low weight, as I can't see any other good reason to air cool a diesel. Perhaps military vehicles, or heavy construction equiptment? Locomotives usually build super heavy because weight =traction.

If the 911 grew up and became a tank, this is what it would be.

Of note, this vehicle also had a full torsion bar suspension! Clearly they had the 911 in mind!
