The infamous Bosch Hammer (aka KTS301) at work (long with pics)
Hi,
I justed wanted to share some pictures of my new Bosch Hammer (aka KTS301) at work on my 3.6 installed in an earlier Targa. It's named after its funny shape. It looks like an L with the LCD display on the short arm of the L and the keypad on the long arm. ![]() First I had to build a diagnostics port. A stock car has a 19-pin AMP socket. The matching connectors where made by AMP as a Porsche special. They are NLA. Well, since I don't care about stock I used an 8pin LEMO socket for this purpuse. They are readily available and sturdy to survive a lifetime. I made a matching cable with a LEMO 8-pin connector on one side and the AMP connector for the hammer on the other. It works just as well and is a lot cheaper. ![]() Next lets switch on the Hammer, it goes through its selftest routine showing the firmware version of the internal CPU ![]() Next it shows the software version of the installed software cartridge. Bosch made several generic versions and a Porsche-only version that was only available to Porsche dealers. The generic versions can do some stuff on the Porsche but not all. Here the latest Porsche-only cartridge is installed. It is version 8.1 in English dated September 1st 1995 (Germany notes the date as dd/mm/yy). This module covers everything up to early 993's. ![]() Next you can choose which vehicle you work on such as 944, 911, 928 etc. Choose 2 for 911 to initiate the communication ![]() ![]() ![]() The Hammer scans the vehicle bus for installed components. In my case I only have the DME. A stock vehicle would have additional units such as the climate control unit, the ABD, the onboard computer, etc. Here we find one item: 1=DME ![]() The Hammer then reads out the software version of the installed DME and its type information ![]() Next we get into a menu where you can depending on whether the engine is running or not check for actual values or actuate components on the engine. First I read out the fault memory to check whether anything is obviously wrong. It comes back with a clean bill of health. ![]()

The actual value menu allows displaying realtime information of various engine conditions such as RPM, ignition timing, temperatures, etc. You can also perform the system adaptation and the knock count from here.
![]() I have choosen to display the head temperature sensor output. It is given in degrees C and F. ![]() I hope this was fun. There is lots you can do with the Bosch Hammer. A failure of a sensor or wiring harness sould be a breeze to diagnose with this. And if you can't find the fault you can still bash the engine using it in its literal sense - as a hammer..... Cheers, Ingo

Thanks, Ingo! Nice to see how it works.
You should sell your port adapters to guys who have done swaps.

Great thread and very interesting details. Ditto to Jack's comment, you should sell them, I'd be interested. Can you read CHT on all 6?

Interesting - would that work on a 3.2 for diagnostics? I read somewhere my 85 Carrera did not have an internal diagnostic computer that would give out codes for faults. Would this tool allow a mechanic to do that kind of diagnostic scan? Sorry if this is a 101 question, I'm not familiar with the technology.

Cool Ingo. Did you get your hammer from Germany? Is it 120 or 240 VAC?

James,
the scanner reads the CHT sensor that is used to determine whether the engine is under cold-start conditions or warmed up. So no, you can "only" read the one sensor that is installed. The tool essentially talks to the Motronic and displays what the Motronic reads. The main reason for being able to read the sensors is to check whether the Motronic sees plausible values. I might come up with a little something if someone is interested in terms of adapters. To make it really plug and play you would need to get a set (male and female) of the 14pin connector. This carries most of the signals required for the diagnostics port. From there is it simply soldering and assembly work. Short of that you could solder the wires straight to the 14 pin connector of the conversion harness. That is what I did. Cheers, Ingo

Yes, I got mine from Germany. It came with the standard 220V wall transformer. I made another one for 120 volts from scatch. Now you can use it anywhere.

thanks Ingo. I might have some interest in that set-up. Once again, nice write-up.

SURE, if I don't have to remorgage my home for one ![]() I know that JDS Porsche in the UK sells reproduction versions of the 19-pin Porsche connector. John is asking something like 80$ for one. I have not seen any original cables for sale in a while. I think the LEMO solution works just as well. What I really like to get is some male and female 14pin connectors. If someone has a cut-up harness from a 964 or later and could spare these connectors that would be great.

Mike,
that would be cool. Here is a picture of the 14-pin connector I was talking about. This style is used throughout the later models (964, 993, etc). If I could get a matching pair I would be very thrilled. You can see the cloth side with the exposed wires. This is the DME harness. The side with the electrical tape is my conversion harness. If I get the 14pin male/female combination that would make things cleaner. ![]() Regarding the diagnostics socket and the matching cable for the hammer that would also be very interesting for me. I just heard that the cables are unobtanium. Let me know what you come up with. Cheers, Ingo

Just curious, how much is a hammer, approximately?
Do you have a schematic of the inputs to the hammer? Any way to adapt an OBDII code reader? I know pre '96 is OBDI. Very cool - thank you for sharing!
