911 broke down last night major oil spill

Can anyone help pls

My Porsche 911 997 2006 with very low mileage broke down last night and dropped all it's engine oil. I recently had it serviced so am wondering if someone has forgotten to put a cap on somewhere. Just wondered what I was facing before the garage take a look. breakdown down truck tried to put more oil in but it went straight through. It had made a small noise minutes before like I had run over a small branch or twig which was not the case.

Would appreciate any comments/suggestions

Thanks

sounds like an IMS/RMS.... I would not start the engine, get it towed to the dealer if warranted. 2006 has the same design with 99-05 that has similar issues. The engine and tranny needs to be separated.... if it dumped oil all of the sudden and made noises most likely it is the IMS bearing and can be pulled out and upgraded.... hopefully the shaft is still good

Well you have a crank seal between the eng and gearbox, right behind the flywheel but i doubt very much it would dump the oil out at that rate ...
Could also be that you lost your drain plug due to the mechanic forgetting to tighten it properly...
Like Neil mentioned, pictures are worth a thousand words !!!

You might have more luck posting on a newer 997 forum ...

Cheers !

Assuming you were driving what triggered you to pull over? Light on dashboard or loss of engine power?

Agree with redridge. Sounds like your IMS bearing (Intermediate Shaft), if you're not under warranty you're buying a new engine (I hope I'm wrong..).

Post over on the Rennlist website (997 forum). Many more 997 owners over there.

Guys - thank you all for your responses, much appreciated. Given I can not get under the car to take a picture I have decided it is one for the Porsche main dealer about 4 miles away from me. Once they tell me what the problem was I will share it with you - it does though sound like the IMS.

For some reason i always thought the IMS/RMS issues were only common to the 996's and were addressed for the 997 models ...

Unfortunately, the 997's suffer IMS failures too.

Don't want to be negative but the fact you had a sound minutes before the spill more than likely indicates the IMS sealed bearing dried out and froze up.

I hope I'm wrong though!!!!

Good luck!
