What does this switch do?

I checked the owners manual...and pushed on the switch.... but i still don't know what this does. I just found it yesterday on my '92 C2 Cab.

It is a little black switch on the side of the footwell, right behind the trunk release lever.

I'm guessing, but maybe a valet switch from an aftermarket alarm system?

That's the 'eject' switch - don't initiate that switch while the car is moving unless you are in serious danger.

that looks like a "clifford" alarm valet switch.
is it a momentary on one side, latches in the middle and latches on the other side? if it does that's what it is.
i'm putting my money on that

yea, it does seem to lock on the up side and you have to hold it on the down side. Maybe it locks the rear seat area storage compartments. I will have to check that out when I get home.

Thought I had the stock alarm - no record of an alarm upgrade.

Have you clicked the switch when the car was running? The PO of mine installed a hidden fuel pump cut-off switch and failed to infrom me. Needless to say, when the switch went out I had a very difficult time diagnosing why the car wouldn't start.

I know the Boxster has a switch right about there that raises/lowers the rear spoiler. Push it! Dare ya!

Reminds me of the Far Side cartoon where the guy's sitting on a plane, and the caption reads something like "Bob tries to get a stewardess" as he's reaching for the "Wings stay on/Wings fall off" switch.

My guess would be an alarm. Try setting off your alarm and pushing it. or pushing it and then setting off your alarm.

i'm going to guess that your car either has/had a clifford alarm on it and the remotes were lost or not given to you when you bought it (assuming you didn't buy it new).
99.99% of the time when an aftermarket alarm is installed the factory alarm is left fully intact.
i would take a peek under the dash to see if you see anything "not stock", you can usually follow wires to find the brain of the alarm if you're nimble enough to get under there.
if there is no alarm installed the previous owner had it removed and left the switch there so not to leave an open hole (standard practice in my field).
you may get lucky and be able to buy remotes (between 20-100$ depending on the model) and have a nice aftermarket alarm
keep us posted what you come up with.

I did try pushing it - with car off and running. I will try it with alarm armed.

I have been under the dash...didn't notice anything foreign.

If nothing happens with the alarm on - looks like i'll be taking apart that part of the car and following wires.

i'm going to guess it's a dead switch.
it's not going to have anything to do with your factory alarm.
get behind the carpet and see if it's even connected to anything, it's probably not.

Well, no luck here. I tried the switch with the alarm on, off, ...car on, off and nothing. The switch even has a little built in light on it and is connected to wires that look very professional or factory. I followed the wires up into the back of the dash....but they went way up into an area that i can't see without removing many parts.

I think you guys are right - probably an alarm component that is no longer connected. I think I will assume its the before mentioned South African security device switch and warn everyone not to push it.

Now stupid human question #2... While I was under the dash I noticed the cover on the other footwell. I had seen it before, but never opened it up. What is this for ? Diagnostic computer connection? North African Security device?

the momentary switch activates that device on the right..its a high voltage eletrical stunner...

it only works when sensors in the passenger seat senses an occupant...its used for when your significant other keeps telling you to slow down..

they wont even know...

you'll just hear "HONEY! slow DOWN!..ow"
