Big Leak

Oil is dripping down the back of my right chain cover. Dripping profusely. I took both valve covers off and verified that the rocker shafts are still in place. I think this means I need to remove the cam retaining plate and check the gasket and the big o-ring. I can see the gasket, so I apparently did not forget this, but perhaps I neglected to torque the three little bolts.

Anybody disagree with my conclusion that this cam retaining plate is where the oil must be coming from?

Jim,

That sounds about right to me. the bolts could not be tight or maybe the o ring is pinched or something. You remembered to put the the gasket on right?

No disagreement here. Seems fairly likely! I'm sure the retiming will go smooth this time ...

Yeah. The gasket's on, I can see it. I agree with you, a pinched o-ring or bolts that were not tightened. I may have to fire my sidekick over this. Wait a minute. Superman doesn't have a sidekick to blame stuff on.

If it makes you feel better you can fire me if you like.

I'm not doing anything around here anyway.

Superman,

Same thing happened to me when I did mine, not profusively but it leaked.

Take the cam plate off, remove the gasket and oring, seal them with some sealant and retighten to spec, that will do it.

Effing Pain in the Butt if you ask me.

OOOOOOOOFFFFF! I felt that one way over here in IL.

Just kidding. I know, just saying it's an easier fix than the #8 nose bearing.

Thanks Dennis. Should go together pretty straightforward, but if I need a hand i'll let you know. Might need some help squeezing that sway bar back in!

By the way, just killing time "on lunch."

Thanks dudes. You're fired, Blue Sky.

(knock on wood) this engine leaked in many places before this project, including cylinder bases....many places. There are no 'case' leaks and there also appears to be no 'head' leaks. My fingers are crossed in hopes of a leak-free engine.

I think I have a gasket and o-ring lined up for tinight, so it may be a late night but I may also get to drive my car to work tomorrow.

And I'll thank JW for the tips on gasket dressing and especially the Dirko case sealant. I think that stuff could seal a ship's hull.

Oh, and the nose bearing is dry as a bone. (again, knock on wood)
