Question Altenator Pulley Tech Quest- EASY

Im wondering about the "slack" in the Alt Pulley to the Alt when installed.. Does it/ Should it have ANY play back and forth ... I know the tighter the tolerance the better. but is some acceptable? .. I have a NEW pulley and a used but in good condition alt fan.. Doesnt seem to have any wear on it.

Thanks.

If you are asking if there should be some slack/gap between the outer pulley half and the inner pulley half (mounted on the fan) when the fan belt is at its proper tension, the answer is an emphatic NO!

When properly installed, the outer pulley half will bolt up hard against the spacers which will be hard against the inner pulley half. And when the pulley nut comes tight, the fan belt is "just right."

If the fan belt is too loose, then disassemble it all and move one spacere from between the pulley halves to between the nut and the outer pulley half, then reassemble and check tightness.

If the fan belt is too tight, disassemble it all and move one spacer from under the nut to between the pulley halves, reassemble, and check tightness.

If the outer pulley is "loose" and can wobble, things will come apart in short order with the engine running.

Thanks for the response, but I dont think I was clear enough.... pressed for time...

When ONLY for test fitting purposes WithOut the Belt or spacers.. By just putting the Pulley on the Fan should or can there be Any play Left and Right?

I hope this is a better description

Thanks

The pulley (or technically the 1/2 pulley) should fit rather well to the protrusion over the fan. It's not a tolerance fit so I guess it could move a little...

...but not 100% sure that this is what you're asking

i know this thread is old, but this is the exact issue I am experiencing currently. I've included a video to help explain the problem. Does anyone know if this amount of play is acceptable? I hope the O.P. found the answer!

Fan video - YouTube

I'm pretty much stumped right now, as a used fan from a reputable place does the same thing my original does. The pulley half in the video is brand new.

Thank you

I just removed my pulleys as my engine is out of the car and i have some play as well ... the only problem with your fan is that your parts look too clean

Cheers !

Thanks for the compliment Phil! It makes me feel better knowing someone else has some play too.
