Installing struts

I would like to install new struts on my 1982 911. Is this a tough job that requires a lot of special tools? I would appreciate all inputs. thanks, Dave

Are you just replacing the inserts in the existing struts? Then it is not a hard job. No specialty tools. I found it tough to find something to grab onto the top part of the shock - the dust cover - so I could remove the trunk nut on the shaft. Also, you will need a new roll pin and insert it the correct way.

Edit - Here is some info on the roll pin (for Bilsteins) Says they can be reused.

Bilstein Roll Pins

it is not hard. it is detailed in the 101 projects book. it requires no special tools, unless you have bilstein struts in which case you may need a spanner wrench to remove the top front strut nut.

I used a big Channel Lock. Is this the same as a spanner wrench - or close?

Edit: No it's not. I need to look at Wayne's book as I don't see how (or where) to affix a spanner. Edit #2 - I see no reference to a spanner in 101 projects. I just used the big Channel Locks to grab onto the dust shield tube.

If you are changing from (e.g.,) Boge to Bilstein struts that is a different story.
