Installing struts
I would like to install new struts on my 1982 911. Is this a tough job that requires a lot of special tools? I would appreciate all inputs. thanks, Dave

Are you just replacing the inserts in the existing struts? Then it is not a hard job. No specialty tools. I found it tough to find something to grab onto the top part of the shock - the dust cover - so I could remove the trunk nut on the shaft. Also, you will need a new roll pin and insert it the correct way.
Edit - Here is some info on the roll pin (for Bilsteins) Says they can be reused. Bilstein Roll Pins Last edited by Bob Kontak; 10-31-2011 at 07:22 PM.. |

it is not hard. it is detailed in the 101 projects book. it requires no special tools, unless you have bilstein struts in which case you may need a spanner wrench to remove the top front strut nut.

Edit: No it's not. I need to look at Wayne's book as I don't see how (or where) to affix a spanner. Edit #2 - I see no reference to a spanner in 101 projects. I just used the big Channel Locks to grab onto the dust shield tube. ![]() Last edited by Bob Kontak; 10-31-2011 at 07:37 PM.. |

If you are changing from (e.g.,) Boge to Bilstein struts that is a different story.
