No heater booster fan - burrrrr?
Hey guys just in the process of buying an 1979 911SC as a weekend car. No plans to drive in winter.
PPI said that the heater booster fan is not working. I need to drive the car back home 900 miles to canada in the next week or so. Temps will be cool all the way back and may get some snow. Will there be enough heat to stay moderately warm and/or defrost windscreen? Also where can this part be bought? Dealer said no longer availabe from Porsche (price was listed at $900). Thanks |

Check the fuse first. It's the one in the middle in the engine compartment.

Like josh said, check the fuse first. The original fan can be rebuilt. You will get plenty of heat whilst moving due to the fact your engine fan will be pushing heat to the front.

By all means, check the fuse as suggested...if you have a blown fuse, replace it, turn on the blower fan and if it blows that fuse, then you probably have the original blower fan motor, and it's likely the motor shaft bushing has been galled out to the point that the motor shaft can no longer rotate. If the motor keeps on turning with a galled bushing, then eventually bad things will happen to other parts of the motor as well. IF it's a worn out bushing, and there's not been significant damage to other components of the motor, you might be able to have a machine shop re-drill the housing for another bushing. This worn bushing issue is apparently not uncommon on these motors...I have done this to mine, and so far, it's holding up.
NOW, if the re-bushing idea doesn't work/doesn't appeal to you, or the motor itself is beyond reconditioning, then you can spend big bucks for the whole enchillada, OR (and I make this suggestion only because our host is temporarily out of stock on this motor) you can take a look at Stuttgart Classic Parts (PN 911-624-151-02) and for $138.88 and a few $$$ for shipping, you can replace just the motor itself with something brand new (assuming your blower cage, other housing components are still OK). Good luck!!

You will be pushing the levers down to lessen the heat, even with a broken fan, if the hoses are connected and the levers and other parts are working/moving so you can direct the air.
All the air for your cabin heat is forced through the electric blower fan into the big hoses. Don't disconnect anything. |

It is a moot point. The seller had his mechanic remove the fan and he found a little piece of rubber jamming the fan blades. Too bad as I had negotiated him down on that point...

In the event that it becomes an UN-moot point in the future, keep the above comments in mind.

What is present in the car now? Edit - Are you saying it is fixed and it was just the rubber and all is ok now? |

Sorry for not being clear. There was a small piece of rubber that jammed the fan and it is working now. The seller only drove the car in good weather and does not recall the last time he would have turned the heat on in 8 years of ownership.
Thanks for the replys and help. |
