Replacing MFI shaft seal - any experience?

Hello all,

does anyone have experience replacing the seal on the shaft end of the mfi pump. I'm asking as it seems to be a pressed in piece into the bearing retainer. Is this correct? I don't want to 'fiddle around' and damage things.

What I mean is part 29 seems to be pressed into part 30 in this diagram:

MFI PUMP

Thanks

I assume that this is the shaft seal that points toward the front of the car. There are several threads on this so do a search. Some manage to do this with the engine in the car; if so, a partial engine drop will help a lot. I looked hard at it and decided to drop the engine since I had a few other issues to deal with as well. In hindsight, it was a good decision for me since I found it difficult to pull out the old seal even with the engine out of the car. I had to drill a small hole in the old seal and thread in a screw to pull out the old seal. I just don't think I could have done that with the engine in the car. Others may disagree...

Hi, are you talking about the seal on the mfi pump shaft or about the crankshaft seal at the flywheel side? I'm talking about mfi pump shaft seal & did quite some searches to no avail. If there are numerous write-ups on this, pls point me into the right direction. Appreciated!

Ooops! My bad. It was the crankshaft seal that I replaced. (I need to read these posts more carefully!) I am not aware of posts concerning the pump shaft seal.

Piece of cake, elflamo. There is nothing special about this seal - it goes in (and comes out) like any other shaft seal. Yes, it is pressed inot part #30, so you might have to dig it out with a small pick, screwdriver, or something. Just press the new one in square (oil it up a bit first to make it easier) and you'll be good to go.

I believe Steve is explaining the camshaft seal on the forward end on the left cam, where it sticks through the cam tower and the drive pulley bolts on. Yes, this one is easily done in the car; I've done it many times. The #29 seal on the pump is much easier if the pump is out of the car.

Edit - beat me to it, Steve.

When installing the new seal, don't push it in too deep. There is not bottom shoulder to stop it from hitting the bearing.

Thanks guys. I'll check out my current/used #29 and #30, as at first and second glance it wasn't so obvious that these are in fact separate parts.
