Starting / Running problem
Hello
I have got a weired problem and need some fresh ideas to help fix this. The car runs fine with no misfires etc. But will only run when I have the key in the starting postion with the starter motor still running. As soon as I release the key as you would once the car is started the engine cuts out, all the igntion lights are still etc. I can drive the car and move it about but with the key held in the starting postion. I have tried fuel and vacum piepes and are all seem to be ok. The car is a 1978 911 sc 3.0 CIS Any help is appreciated thanks ![]() |

Have you tried swapping out the fuel pump relay (the red one) with a known good black one?
The way your car is wired, the fuel pump first comes on when the key is turned to the "start" position. Then, when the engine begins to run (air taken in through the intake) the fuel pump will continue to operate. This is done through the relay. Since the electrics are still on (if I understand you correctly--your sentence is a bit odd), I'd suspect a problem with the relay. You can also try these test. Remove the red relay and look at the bottom, you will see numbers next to each pin. Locate pin #30 and 87a, and carefully note the socket those two pins seat in in the relay base. Use a piece of wire to jump the connection between #30 and 87a in the relay seat. Turn on the ignition. If your fuel pump comes on, the relay was bad. Or Remove the air cleaner. Turn on the ignition and go to the back of the car, put your hand into the intake and gently push up on the plunger. If the fuel pump comes on, it was the relay. BTW, from what you describe, isn't your starter motor grinding away as you move the car with the key in the "start" position?

Sounds like your ignition block is defective, its bolted to the ignition key lock unit and can be seen in the photo.

Got it all sorted thanks, turned out to be a break in the wire for the CIS sensor for the CIS sensor plate.
And only moved the car on the starter as I had to move it, otherwise I would not of moved it, thanks again ![]() |
