Help!!!!!! No Spark & Low Voltage 911/930

Having a bad week, two 911`s out of storage and both have no spark.
I can usually fix anything but t-shooting electrical is my achilles heel.......1986 911 Turbo.....no spark, CDI is only getting 5.50 volts.....everything else is throughout car is 12V+, changes fuses, swapped relays, cleaned connections, cleaned ground etc. Nothing, any thoughts? I`ve never seen anything similar......

I have no spark on my 911S but tracked it to the CDI, as it was getting 12v but not
working at all. So looking for a 3 pin cdi or perma tune. I almost lost my mind when I discovered that my turbo would not start and had no spark after finding the same thing on my 911S.....gypsies, gremlins, lightning, who knows....If anyone has advice on the turbo I would be grateful......thanks

On which pin of the six are you measuring 5.5V? With it connected or not?

Can you please describe in exact detail everything you have done to troubleshoot. There is an answer.

I suspect corroded connections. A little methodical work with steel wool/sand paper will probably fix your problem. Keep your voltage meter handy as you do this, one connection at a time. It worked for me. Your electronics are probably fine. It doesn't take much to break a connection. I lost power to a glow plug circuit on a Mercedes 300 D and the connection looked bright and shiny but was not passing electricity. Simply disconnecting the leads and reconnecting them restored the circuit. All it takes is a nearly invisible, thin layer of oxidation to ruin your day.

Tested with cdi disconnected, found 5.5 volts when key was turned on at the lower middle wire looking directly at the plug. (red with white stripe). So here`s what I`ve done. No spark, tested and cleaned all fuses, tested all relays, cleaned battery ground terminals and ground wires in trunk, cleaned wires in engine area, cleaned wiring harness pins, no change in status. I appreciate all the help.

Can you describe the red wire with white stripe? A spiral stripe or a straight one?

There's your problem David. Porsche didn't use straight white tracer wire, they used spiral tracer, but the wire to terminal 15 is supposed to be solid red, no tracer. Somewhere along the way somebody hacked the wiring harness, and there's probably a high-resistance connection, a bad splice, a broken solder joint, or some corrosion in that path.

Now, go ahead and run a brand new jumper from the battery to terminal 15, just for temporary testing purposes. You aren't going to permanently install this, you're just going to test with it. Make sure both ends are insulated so you don't get shorts or a mini arc welder, this test wire will be unfused. Try it again and I bet you the car runs great. Then it's a question of tracing back the wire and replacing it with solid red, 1.5mm^2 cross section. That is the equivalent of 16AWG in the USA. Here is a link to the wiring diagram

http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_82SC_Part1-2.jpg

The Germans have rules for everything and electrical wiring is no exception. In this case, the rule goes by the name of DIN 72 552, which is one of their old industrial standards which specifies what wire terminal is labeled by which number. And terminal 15 is, almost without exception in the world of German cars, the switched +12v from the battery through the ignition switch. Which makes perfect sense, inasmuch as the six pin CDI is the ignition, so you'd want to switch it on with the key.

So somewhere there is a high resistance, somewhere there is wire buggery by some prior owner or hack mechanic, who used a piece of British or USA wire to try and cover his tracks.
