911 engine width and length?

Could someome please educate me on 911 engines? Especially the overall width. I have a special tube frame project and keep yearning to install a 2.7 or so engine and satisfy my lifelong love for these.

My project is mid engine and I'm already using a 915 box, the front chassis is finished and the tubing that forms the engine area 'envelop' is up next.

Thank you!

Mike -
I have a 2.7L engine sitting on a pallet in my garage. . . tell me exactly what you need and I'll take some measurements for you.

Send a message via Yahoo to Lukesportsman
Please give us specific areas you want measurements from. I have one on the stand right now.

The overall width at the cam covers is the big question. Does that overall width change appreciably by moving down to an area 5" below the crankshaft centerline?

The sheetmetal shrouding is not important.

Anyone? A tape measure across the cam covers should suffice.
Thank you.

I measure closer to 33" wide on my 2.7L. The spark plug wires and oil line banjos appear to be just a bit outside of the cam covers width.

That's very helpful. Thanks.

A chassis using the engine would need to be specific for it with structure outside of the 30".
Now if I were to run across a complete engine for sale that would be tempting....

Go with Tom's, I'm on my back eyeballing it with a yardstick about 10" down from the outside edge of the covers.

Very interesting discussion for me!

I'd like to know the measurements at longest/widest points. In essence, I'm looking for the "footprint" dims so that I can assess if I have enough space in my garage. I want to extract my 83 SC engine, but don't know if my garage will have space for it. I'm OK with mounting engine to engine stand and wheel it outside whenever I do work on it. But, during idle times, it will need to be stored inside.

Thanks!
