Ignition advance on new motor? Need help.
I am having trouble getting my carbs dialed in on my new 2.5 motor. PMO wants 5-8 degrees advance at idle to make carbs work. My wrench is adament that ignition should be TDC only. Distributor is a 70S.
Any experts out here on ignition timing? Thanks. |

carbs adjust better with the timing advanced some and the idle at 1000. set the timing to 35° total advance, and that should leave the idle timing advanced from 0° somewhat. total advance timing is done by raising the RPM until the timing light can detect no further mechanical advance, and at that point, the 35° degree mark on the pulley lines up with the mark on the fan housing. if it pings with that setting, retard it a hair until it doesn't. premium gas of course. that's how you get response out of these things. not for turbos.

Jim,
If I'm not mistaken, the early S distributors provided about 30º total advance. The balance of the 35 came from the static timing (5º btdc). But what Mr. Walker says is true about yanking the timing back if you detect low speed detonation. Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars www.seinesystems.com |
