Noisy Door Stay

The door stays on my 79 911 pop loudly at the very end of the opening range. Is this normal? Both sides do it. I just removed the drivers side to have a look. It is clean, no damage evident. I greased it with white lithium and put it back in. Seems to pop even louder now. Is it worn out and I just don't know it?

drive out the pin and use a 6mm bolt and nyloc nut. tighten until it quits snapping.

If I'm understanding what you're suggesting, just replace the pin with a bolt and tighten it so that the slack is no longer there?

When I replaced mine with new stays, they make a noise at two spots. The first click is when the door is mid-way open and the second one is when it is all they way open.

I believe the noise is a result of the nub on the stay that is holding the door in the partially, or all the way open position.

It seems that your mid point stay may be worn and you are just hearing the all the way open cling.

I think the strap hole elongates a little and the spring loading changes suddenly from a pull to a push when you open the door causing the pop noise. If you replace the pin with a bolt and load it up it will stop for a while. I welded up the holes and redrilled them to size. Easy job to replace with new straps from Pelican, unless it's the holes in the body mount ears that have elongated.

Well, thanks to all for the advice. I replaced the pins as suggested and tightened them up and... problem solved. Thanks again and on to the next problem.

I just tapped down the OEM pin so the arm can ride on a newer un-worn surface on the pin.

Greased as well.

I replaced both of my door stops thinking they were bad. The "pop" was still there. Replacing the pin and installing a 6mm bolt made all the difference. Worked for me.
