Low RPM Money Shift Possible???

Today, I was driving on the highway and accidentally went from 3rd to 2nd gear. I meant to shift to 4th gear, but was off a bit. The RPMs were fairly low about 4,000 RPMs in 3rd when I shifted. I started to let the clutch go,saw the RPMs jump to about 5,000 to 5,500 and then immediately pushed in the clutch to go back to 3rd. I think everything is OK, but figured I would ask if it is possible to cause any issues.

Thanks,

Chuck

As long as you didn't hear any grinding you are most likely fine with the exception of the bit of wear you put on your clutch. Usually the biggest issue with these things happens when you are at say 6000 in 3rd and go to do what you did, second is spinning so fast that the gears make a nasty grinding noise.

regards
Dave

No grinding or weird noises, other then me freaking out. Now I am scrutinizing every sound the car makes.

As long as the revs didn't go REALLY high, you should be fine. The money shift is the money shift because valves hit pistons or rpms exceed structural limits and things start to fall apart. If the rpms were still below the normal redline, then you should be fine.

My tachometer definitely did not hit redline. I just had the engine and transmission rebuilt, so I am extra sensitive.

Thanks,

Chuck

You just discovered why many of us installed the Seine shift gate or a similar system.
Consider this an "opportunity for improvement".

FWIW - I downshifted from 3rd to 2nd in an 85 300ZX at 90 mph. It sounded like shattering glass when the engine blew.

My five year old son thought it was cool to ride on the center console in the tow truck.

This is the reason that VERY few even drive my car,........essentially NO ONE (anymore)....I ginger the hell out of my G50,...the 2 people that would ever drive it know that they're to shift with their 3 fingers (dammit!)...with EAZE!!!!!!!!!.....

@Bob.....MAN: that's a bad run!

I'm like Chuck (even after 6 years on this one-1989)...very sensitive to what the hey I'm doing, especially when she's revved,.........there is no room for error in THAT world.....

Let's just say you tested your rods.....

all is probably ok.

BEST!

Doyle

It sounds as if you did no damage at all, lucky you. 5500 rpm is a non-issue, unless the engine is really tight after your rebuild

Yes, the engine was pretty tight. New pistons, rings, cylinders, cams, rebuilt heads, etc. Nothing I can do about it now, just be careful and keep an eye on things. I have 300-400 miles on it since the rebuild.

Thanks,

Chuck
