Targa top seal solution

I was contacted several times this weekend by Targa owners who had been reading and old thread about the Targa top over the windshield seal problem. Thought it was best to clear the air with the facts.
1. 1995 Porsche discontinued the correct 911 Targa top over the windshield seal.
2. Porsche substituted the 964 seal in it's place. Problem was this seal was 20% too big.
3. Everyone who began using these seal encounter problem of the top sitting up too high and massive wind noise.
4. Those lead to latch breaking and then top fly-offs.
5. The crime here was that you never new you had a problem for the correct 911 part # was on the bag but in the bag was the 964 seal.
6. I became aware of the [problem in my Targa top restoration business when customers complained tops didn't fit properly. I traced the problem of fitment to owner having replaced the seal.
7. The only solution was to cut down the improper seal.
8. In the year 2003 I had a deal buy out of new old stock parts when dealership was changing hands. In the boxes bought were to correct seals with red parts tags.
9. But now what to do? Answer, get them made. It took me 5 years to find a supplier who would make them at a sell-able price and where I wouldn't have to pay for the mold and buy 5000 pieces.
10. The short store, I have them in stock. Other including Porsche dealers are still
selling the the improper seal

Here Here! I highly recommend Dan's Front Seal!

Dan, may I suggest instructions on fitting these seals on properly as you would do it?

What I found is when the POs replaced it with the wrong seal he also replaced the side seal to door well, it was too long and I had to cut it down to make sure your seal will properly align to the door notch where the quarter window meets the door.

Hi Dan,

Good info.

DRACO - Isn't there a rubber "pin" that is part of the side seals the fits into the door surround seal? Did you have to whack that off?

Dan, good on you.

Have you considered contacting the PCA and letting them know the problem? Maybe they would send out a service bulletin to Targa owners.

OR maybe they would give you Targa owner contact information.

Targa Seal.

1. Targa rear seal are ok from any source.
2. The 964 Targa top is much different than the 86-89 top and they are not interchangeable.
3. I have tried to share this seal problem with PCA technical as well as PCNA. There was little interest, and it would seem folks all of us Targa owners are on our own.
Any other questions?

Targa tech

New over the windshield seal gets super glued to door seal. New seal has no nub at base.

Hi:
I've got a 1981 911 SC Targa, top recently redone by Dan at Carsinc to just like new condition. (he does it right if your considering having your top done Dan should be your choice) I've recently noticed that the seal on my targa bar that the rear of the targa top butts against is loose. It appears to be in very good shape. Does anyone know if this seal should be glued to the targa bar? If I replace with a new one same question, does the whole seal get adhesive on it when installed? I know this seal rus up the side (along the passenger and drivers side window), across the top, and down the other side. (it's a long seal)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Scott

Thanks Dan. Will you be at the Porsche SWAP meet on April 21st? I'm wondering if you'll have targa seals with you for a 1981 Targa 911 SC.

Thanks.
