Flares & wheels for 72 911 with a 3.6

I have a 72 911t with a 993 engine in it. The rear fenders are rolled and we modified 8x15 fuchs to fit. The tires are Hoosier R6s-225/45/15. This is not enough rubber for track events. I am planning to install SC metal flares and a fiberglass RS rear bumper. I don't want to have turbo or RSR flares. I was thinking about 16x9 fuchs, but what size tire? Will a 275/45/16 fit? Should I consider a 3 piece wheel 17 or 18 inch? 9 or 10 inch wide?
Thanks for any input.

SC flares will allow for a 245 on an 8 or 9 inch wheel.

Nice setup!
W/ SC/Carrera flares you can use a 9.5" wheels, 10" if you really finesse everything
a 275 or 285 tire will fit but everything has to be perfect.

Look at the tires you want to use for track days. That will determine what wheels to use.

if you use HoHos then you are golden, get 9.5x15 ET19 wheels and use 275/35 x15

275/45 x16 are ~ 2.5" taller than the Hoosier 275/35 x15 and commensurately harder to fit, they are also commensurately worse wrt gearing,

275/40 x17 are slightly shorter than 275/45 x16, in 18 you can use 280/30 x18 which is only 1.9" taller than the 275/35 x15

While I will defer to Bill on his advise....everything has to be perfect and you will have an RCH in clearance.

Big tires are harder to find nowadays for 15 and 16 inch wheels.

The advantage of installing flares on a long hood is that you can put the flares where you want them.

When the Carrera flares were installed on my old '73 hotrod, we borrowed a set of 10" Fikses with 275 tires. The flares ended up being cheated out about 3/8 further than what the factory used to leave a bit of wiggle room for 275s.

To do it again, I would do the same.

This is a Fuchs center welded into a 10x17 barrel. I used to run 275's on it on the RS-flared version of my car. You have to massage things just so -- including machining one of the heads of the spring plate bolts, if I remember.

Jack and others are leading you in the right direction. I had to machine a spacer 1/8" different from side to side and massage the Carrera flares on my 72'. Not surprisingly, as many here, Jack's first 72' was the inspiration for my 72' build. I ran 265's on my 10's with no issues quite a bit below Euro. Now running Alton's 17's with his standard spacing with even more clearance. I did have to shave bolts as described too, but no tub modifications.

Bill, who makes a good 9.5x15 ET wheel. If I went to an 18 inch, what width-10? Who makes a 280/30/18 or did you mean 235. I'm not overly concerned with gearing-I've got lots of torque and more top end speed would be good. I have a stock 915 with Kaaz limited slip. I also have rear coil-overs and 930 brakes.
Thanks, Richard

That's a hypothetical wheel, I don't know of any one making one. Most of the guys that use 15s go w/ 9x15 ET14.3 Jongbloeds that work well

If you want to use 18s, again decide on what brand of tire you want to use first

For track use 285/30x18 Hoosier R6, Michelin Sport Cup, BFG R1, Kumho 710 etc come to mind, all are ~24.9" tall

For 18" I've found Forgeline to be able to supply custom o/s wheels, I was able to spec the exact o/s that I needed for my track wheels from them.

Also consider what you will use in front 8" wheels are going to be the max w/ 235 or 245 tires to match the rears in height and width ratio

As Dantilla says the nice thing about adding flares is that you can cheat them out, Ruff cheated theirs out an extra inch to accommodate a 10" wheel. It's best to have the wheel mounted on the axle then fit the flare around it.

Width and ET are the specs that determine fit, height to a lesser extent

That 915 with BIG modern rubber is gonna take a beating. I would suggest looking at people that have done WEVO mods.
