Where does the term "Sugar Scoops" come from

I've heard of my headlight trim rings being called sugar scoops but I have yet to understand the connection. Can somebody explain?

The front of the lenses are relatively vertical and the trim rings tilted so the lower edge and the plastic trim piece form a scoop.

Um, the headlight bucket looks like a giant version (sans handle) of the hand-held plastic/metal scoop we used to use to scoop things like sugar, cereal, flour, etc.

FWIW, the headlight buckets on early Z cars (240Z, 260Z, 280Z and 280ZX) are also generally called "sugar scoops". And coming from that background, I chuckle to myself when I hear Porsche people talk about their "sugar scoops". To paraphrase Paul Hogan, "That's not a sugar scoop, THIS is a sugar scoop!"

I love my Porsche. But a clean well restored 240Z is so attractive. It's the same period - early 70's - when sports cars were so cool. I remember the late 70's when kids at my high school were putting V-8 motors in. Scarab - it think they called it. Like most cars, the 240Z left it's pure road car beginnings and evolved with turbos and more weight and became a GT. Too bad. And too bad all the cars from that period rust out.

I think the Miata has run that course. Remember how simple and pure they were to begin with and kids put V-8s in those too. Toda's MX-5 is more car, but may have lost it's soul.

Then the Boxter. Starts out underpowered and then gains sophistication and horsepower. Can't leave well enough alone. Everyone wants more power and the pure soul of the car seems to go away.

That's why I like my SC Porsche. Made well enough to last and be re-born many times. It's underpowered by today's standards but it still has soul.

I ditched the sugar scoops and found some H-4s. I like that upgrade.

You mean awesome hot rod lookin' scoops! They are actually understood by hot rod guys who put the "Jaguar flats" on their custom rods. On some cars they look very good, but you just have to have a good looking car to begin with.

Cheers!

Thanks Jonathon! It's an MA Shaw fiberglass ducktail. Great fit and finish. The wheels are polished and refinished 7, 8 x 16 Fuchs.

And of course the stock '78 sugar scoops!

Cheers,

- Craig_D

Hey Craig, I noticed you have a '90 Honda Hawk GT?? My first bike was a 1982 FT500 Honda Ascot and the swingarm from the Hawk was a mod I was going to do to it! Also front forks were a direct swap with front wheel/dual discs I'm pretty sure. (maybe triple tree had to come with it, can't remember) I owned the ascot for 7 years and did lots of mods to it...

Big headlight, vortex clip ons, progressive rear shocks/springs, clocks from a CB750 (my dads first bike) and the mirror was also from a CB750 (the actual part from my dads cb750 which was the only thing he kept of it unfortunately)

From the UK, referring to the E Type Jaguar headlights.

If a 911 was totally invisible, scoops would still not look good.....

I love the sugar scoops look. Gives the sc a warm face. The H4s make it look cold and dead.

You are entitled to your very wrong opinion.

To me, the sugar scoops on my Carrera look like an afterthought or work-around. (Which they were, of course, to meet the stupid US requirement for sealed beam lights.) Not at all integrated into the car's lines. There will be H4s on mine at some point.

But for those of you that like them, keep 'em. It's not like they totally ruin a great car, or anything like that.
