Rocker Panel Question`

I've checked several threads and can't seem to find the answer to this issue. I removed my rocker panels some time ago (88 Carrera) and was looking at putting them back on but it seems odd that it's just metal to metal where the rocker panel meets the car body. Shouldn't there be something between the two pieces of metal? I'm not talking about the rubber strip that slides on later, this is the metal to metal contact. I was thinking there some sort of foam padding between the two when I took it off but now I am not su sure. Any ideas?

TIA

nope metal to metal, but remember there are spaces at the bottom that need to put on before placing the sheet metal screws.
