Hello, new with a common problem!

Hello everyone,

I am working on my father's 1977 Porsche 911s Targa, and I am running into the common problem of wind noise and leaks at highway speeds. If you look at the last two photos you will see where I taped the lift in the top. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Bonk

Hi,
are you sure the front bar is attaching to all the clips on the front of the bar...try flipping it over to verify all are making good contact (4 in front and 4 in back) and that the top bars front and back are fully extended and locking, if they are off try slightly folding and realigning those clips that are off.
this may take a while. also check that the locking mechanism is fully engaging. there is a lot of useful info try the net and it will direct you to lots of info.
good luck... it takes time
Regards, Ben

I have a 78SC Targa, I had some wind noise on the side windows but some adjustment fixed that. For you I would check the rubber seal on the Targa top both front and rear and make sure its meeting the top correctly. It may need replacing or adjusting. It looks as if the fabric is coming up in the front a bit, these tops are quite expensive to recover so you may want to look in to having it fixed rather than jumping to a recover. You may want to see if there is some one in your local area who recovers these tops, they may be best fit to repair it. The other thing is that these are fabric tops that do come off and most of these cars are 30+ years old. Things stretch, things move, and things just dont align like they used to. You will always have a bit of wind noise with these cars in my opinion. What I have found is that I drive my car predominantly in the good weather and the top is usually off. I didn't even notice I had a wind noise issue until 6 months after I bought the car and the cold weather hit.

Regards
Dave

The top was recovered about 6 years ago, and the car has been in a garage for the most part ever since. All the front clips are there, and one is missing in the rear. I am not certain who recovered the top, and tomorrow I will be heading to an auto upholstry shop recommended by the local Porsche dealership. When I called they said they are very familar with these tops, I was just hoping for a cheaper/do-it-yourself fix. Also the seal was replaced and I am uncertain if that was done correctly aswell. I guess I will chat with the professionals tomorrow and make my decision.

Well a quick trip to a recommended auto upholstery shop and it seems the top was assembled incorrectly (most likely). I was quoted $250 to $400 for the repair depending on materials needed. Does that seem like a fair price? Their price on a recover is $600.

That sounds some what fair, I have never had any work done on my top but I have heard that a recover can cost upwards of 1200$ so it sounds like you are getting a deal if you know they do good work.

Regards
Dave

The best policy is to remove the top whenever possible, certainly so during extended storage, to keep the seals from taking a "set". Otherwise the liberal use, SOAK, of silicon spray for all sealing surfaces followed by 24 hours of "storage"

My targa top did the same at speed or when hitting bumps/body flexing. The clips would let loose and wind noise was awful. I replaced the front clips with the new updated/longer ones Part #: 964-565-265-00-OEM Clips hold now. Not sure if that will solve your problem, but it did mine.
