How many bolts are "supposed" to be on CV Joints
While under the car, I happened to notice that my CV Joints have 4 bolts each but there are actually 6 bolt holes. I'm certain that this was intentional as there are (professional looking) plugs in each non-bolted hole and this is the case on the inboard and outboard cv joints.
I'm just curious as I know that my 944 and 914 use 6 bolts each. Why would the 911 only use 4 bolts and the lower hp cars use 6? |

Your car has the early large CV joints with only 4 bolts and 2 dowels. Don't know why they did it this way but it's a better system than the 6 bolt system thats on the SC. Your joints are bigger and the bolts are bigger.

Some cars use 4 bolts and 2 pins, others use 6 bolts. I do not remember the details of the switch.
