confirming temp gauge readings
gents, my 216 k mile car seems to be running a bit higher in temp than expected in the cooler temps...but not much.
210 cruising on a cool day at 72 mph flat terrain. 225 in stop/go on a cool day (60 degrees). Could be the gauge no? Called a local Phoenix Porsche shop and the owner said the oil in the filter will run about 10 degrees less than the indicated dash sender temp using an ir temp unit. I am noting a 20 dgree temp dif...187 @ filter - 207 or so @ the dash gauge. Has anyone heard this correlation before between the filter/gauge temps? |

Who are you using in Phoenix to get work done. There is one shop that I would not trust to work on a taxi-cab, not to mention a 911.
What year is your 911? Joe

if you want to know for sure, get a cheap mechanical temp gauge ($18 at pep boys) and drop the sender in the oil tank.

Joe, it's an '83 SC.
Shumicat...I know the temp at the tank, was wondering about the delta between the tank itself and the reported sender temp from the motor. |

What kind of oil filter are you using.
When I tried the Napa Gold, due to it's high filtration it restricted oil flow and caused my temps to go up. It ay be just me but when I swapped back to Mahle, temps went to normal readings. J BTW, Use a IR reader and check the thermostat's two hard lines in the wheel well, that will give the most real time oil temps going in and out of the engine.

Draco brings up a good point. If you can, put your hand on the oil lines running up front and make sure that both are the same temp.
I have seen thermostatic valves either not open or open partially and neither is good for your temps.

Thanks,
German filter, the other therm and system works fine. Just wanted to know if anyone had used the 10 degree temp diff between filter and sender as a check point or heard of that check before. I'm suspecting a bad sender reading by 10 + degrees is why. |
