Gads!
I am looking around for a new 911, and find a nice 993 Targa, right color, right look, a little beat up but the price is appropriate. First looks was good. I went back to check it out, and then noticed the triptronic. I drove the car, and it really goes compared to my SC, but, well, its a automatic! The shifting was delayed on the upshifts, and the downshifts appeared quicker. So, questions for the experts on the list: 1 - Any other downfalls besides the image hammering? 2 - Any way to improve the shifting response? 3 - Is the resell value or ability to sell the car comprimised? 4 - The BIG question : Should I let this stop me if the price is good? One of the dealers here stated that it took a year for him to dump a 993 triptronic. Now I do plan to keep the car for a while, and the Targa is REALLY NICE, but my sports car sensabilities are telling me to run away. What do you think? |

I would not want a Tiptronic at any price. Its just not a car I would want to drive.
An slushbox 993? What's the point? I'd much, much, much rather have an SC and a few tens of thousands of dollars instead of a Tiptronic 993. But that's just me. |

Unless some sort of disability (or maybe age) is involved, why would someone get a tiptronic in a 993? For the most part, I think dealers are full of *****, but in this case I can believe it took a year to sell a tip 993. Walk away, there are plenty of 993s around. ------------------ 1988 black on black Coupe www.cheaterswayside.com/911/gallery.asp?sort=0&userid=339 |

A tiptronic AND a targa?
Is the car also peach color? Yes, I can imagine that it would take some time to find a buyer. |

Don't do it! I had a tiptronic and after about a month, I realized I had made a huge mistake. Low end torque is horrible. Old ladies in Taurus's beat me off the line at stoplights, without even trying. I also *really* missed the involvement of a manual tranny. If I wanted a powerful cush car, I'd buy a MB.
While inevitably some people will disagree (isn't it that way with everything?), trust me on this; don't do it. If you're patient enough, you'll find another cherry car at a good price. Good luck, Jon |

![]() You guys are right, I should follow my heart. Thinking about it, I don't think I could live with an automatic. However, the comment about slow off the mark is exactly that kind of observation I was looking for! Back to the drawing board! Thanks! |

I've got a spin on this. It's a 993 Targa/Tip which I would imagine is not very common. Maybe find out how many were made and if it could be made beautiful again without parts or paint. I bet if you kept it for awhile it would become a collector car. Also, a car like that would do well in concours events which could add value to the car and attract more buyers for resale purposes. Just a thought....

craptronic... yuck! you will be disappointed with it. i have yet to drive any automatic gearbox that gives the enjoyment of even a crappy stick shift.
go with your heart on this one. the craptronic will disappoint you. keep up the search! obin |
