Need help identifying old ZF limited slip
I have this limited slip...but I dont know what it fits.
the part # on the side is 4061204005. It seems too small to be a 901 LSD. It is internally splined, so I know that it is for IRS. Doesnt appear to be VW. Any suggestions? I will try to post photos later

How about some detail shots of the ZF logo and the part #. Any idea what splines will fit? Any dimensions as to the bolt circle and so on?
Have you pointed Grady Clay to this thread?

I dont have any output flanges here to compare...but thats not a bad idea. I cant get detail photos of the logo and part #, but you can trust me that it is indeed a ZF logo and that I listed the part # correctly.

Oh, I trust you without question. You seem to be a magnet for odd LSD's. Hopefully Grady will see this and have an answer. Some dimensions might help identify the transmissions it might fit.
Free bump anyway.

The old 6:29 ring and pinion used on some 912 used a smaller carrier than the standard 7:31 ring and pinion for the 901 gearbox. Since that 6:29 was sometimes used on hill climb cars they made a ZF LSD for it. I have one at my shop. I'll check the 406 number on it tomorrow when I get to work and tell you if it's the same as yours.
It could also possibly be an old BMW LSD.

The diff in the photo has an 8-bolt ring gear flange, which eliminates any Porsche application aside from possibly something 70's 924. Many other car manufacturers used 8-bolt diffs, including BMW and Volkswagen, and ZF had LSD options for most of them.

Jon,
Good info. Any suggestions of who might have a parts # breakdown for these?

Try ZF North America in Michigan, ZF Friedrichshafen AG | Technologies made by ZF, they have a "ZF Tradition" department, maybe someone there can reference the number for you. Otherwise, post it on Samba or a vintage BMW forum.

Jon,
Good eye. I didn't even look at the number of ring bolts...
