Speedometer cable issue, why does this not fit 915?
Hi,
I have a slight problem when installing my engine and trans into my 1973 T Targa. The speedometer cable does not fit into the 915 gearbox! The gearbox is said to be a 1974, the car is a 1973 and I believe my speedometer cable is from my 1972 911. The problem is that the gearbox has a square shaped speedometer drive, and the speedometer cable has just a flat slot in it. Could anyone please tell me what part is wrong or what I have messed up? I am somewhat tired today.... Thabks, Johan

Johan, I can confirm that the 1972 cable is designed for a flat blade shape drive as per the following picture of the speedo drive from my 1972 915 gearbox. If your 74 gearbox has a square drive then you have 2 choices, replace the cable with a later 74 version or replace the drive gear. The cable change sounds easier, maybe just needs a change to the inner if the outer large threaded connector is the same for the 72 and 74.
![]() Maybe its possible to turn the blade into a square with a die grinder, but thats a one way process and I bet its hardened steel.

never seen a square drive off the trans. maybe you have a section of the old cable still on the trans.
