Threshold strips

Ordered some new threshold strips for the L and R sides.

They have that peal-away tape on the bottom.

Is that enough to keep them there? Or is some form of glue helpful also.

Note: Will clean up the threshold and remove all the old residue first.

I put my hand on it and push off when getting out of the car, noticed that they slip so I will glue them down in the summer. I think that is the way to go.

Had mine on for 2 years now.. no movement. Daily driver in Canada, so they have been through the wet/cold etc. I was a little skeptical myself, as the strips did not seem that sticky, but they are still there.

David

edit after reading James' note.. I don't touch mine entering/exiting the car, so that would make a difference for sure.

The old ones were indeed glued on. I had to replace the passenger (right) side on my '87 and there was a lot of glue residue- kind of hard, not rubbery. So I assume it was the typical 3M weatherstrip adhesive monkey snot-like stuff.

The new replacement was adhered with two long strips of double sided tape as described. As long as the surface is cleaned well of old adhesive with an effective adhesive solvent that doesn't wreck your paint, it'll stick good for a long time.

I'm not a big fan of these threshold strips because they do a nice job of trapping water underneath. My car is virtually rust free on the chassis, except for two places:

>A small spot on the side passenger side rocker panel (the removable pieces that cover the A/C hoses or the oil cooler lines), right underneath the long black rubber trim strip in the channel.

>Underneath the threshold strip.

I ignored replacing my threshold strip for many years after I touched up the dime-size rust spot I found under it. I think I installed the strip just last year as a matter of fact? Of course I installed it crooked..........

After I had some rust spots repaired underneath my rubber strips I mentioned to the body guy that I was going to buy the new strips with the tape on them. He said not to do it due to their ability to trap water. I reused the old strips with glue instead.

Check underneath those strips guys, I live in Arizona (originally a California car) and I still found rust.

I just installed a pair of the strips yesterday... For the most part they went down not ever to be moved again. However at both trailing outer edges they wouldn't stay down so I lifted one corner and squeezed some silicone under the corner and weighted that section over night. That took care of the problem.

I pulled mine, they were glued down. Found a little rust and sanded it down, painted it with Rust Bullet then reinstalled by spreading on BOAT LIFE caulking (black--to match the strip). Water will not get trapped and boat caulk is relatively easy to remove and replace at any interval you want.

Could I trouble you guys to send some photos of your threshold strips? I'm curious which way to go with my '84 (currently nothing covering sheetmetal between door seal and carpet edge - needs some attention). - Rich

Rich,

The threshold strips are self adhesive... Once they go down they're pretty tough to pull up and move around. I laid them down "dry", then I took masking tape to layout the ends and edge, then when you lay down the strips w/o the protective adhesive backing you have something to go by.
