Replace or Not Replace Original Windshield

Greetings,

I recently purchased a nice 1989 911 Coupe (stone grey metallic) and have been contemplating some changes including possibly replacing the assumed original windshield since it has a vast array of chips that make viability less that optimal with sun glare and at night.

This 911 newbie would appreciate input as to:
1) Does replacing the original windshield diminish the overall value to the majority of potential future buyers,
2) If replacing the windshield is a reasonable exercise for increased viability, is the aftermarket glass acceptable given the apparently huge difference between the aftermarket price and OEM, and
3) If aftermarket glass is okay, any specific suggestions.

I have been told a new gasket is a must if I aim to replace.

Thank you.

Replace the windshield. It should have no bearing on resale value. Your car isn't 1 of 10 ever made, so it's not that big a collector's item.

I just had my windshield replaced. We used the $85 OEM seal sold by Pelican, no issues. Not looking through hundreds of tiny specs is awesome, like a new car experience, I highly recommend this upgrade to anyone with an older windshield. You can make the argument that this is a safety enhancement as well.

Some insurance companies will actually pay for the cost of a new windshield every so often as it can be a safety concern. Call your provider and ask them if it is covered in your plan. Even if its not, I would say replace it. Things wear out on these cars, IMO its like asking if you should replace a set of tires that are original. If they have no tread left you are better off with fresh tires than skidding out on a slick road.

Regards
Dave

Wow, that is a steal! I had mine done (due to a major stone chip) last year and mine was about $1600 CDN (it was a Porsche OEM tinted top and radio antenna).

Replacing the windshield is not really different than changing the tires or the windshield wipers.
