911R tail light wiring

a few months back i picked up a set of 911R tails with bulbs/housings. finally getting around to painting them and after looking them over i am not really sure how to wire these things up. this is what i am dealing with:

all 4 housings are like this so i will just use some krylon stained glass paint to make two of them fully red

inside

back

how exactly do i wire these up? do i run the wires through the holes in the back and then solder them to the bulb holders? any help would be appreciated.

You will need to ground the receptacles. Throw a solder on the end of the wires and insert in to the holes, screw down the fastener.

I would put a really bright led light in there for the brake light. If you want to do directionals you need to put a resistor in line to give the blinker the right load.

LED would be perfect....very bright and no heat to melt the plastic.

trying to find them as we speak, and it's not easy... both are festoon bulbs, 21w 43mm and 5w 37mm.

Super Bright LEDs – LED Lights, Bulbs, and Accessories
is the place to go. I bent my tabs a bit to accommodate longer bulbs... no biggie.
Your lenses appear to be Hella lenses meant for a base that has a divider between the bulbs but your bases have no divider???

I really didn't like those bulbs, so I took a different approach. I drilled out that big center hole to accept a standard 1157 dual filament tail light socket, like you would use to make a set a of trailer lights. I used the galvanized sheet metal sockets, and just pop riveted them to the backing plate shown in your photo. I wired both as running lights, and the second filament on the inboards as brake lights, with the second filament on the outboards as turn signals. I just skipped the reverse lights.

Jeff did this to my car as well. I have to say that it is a big improvement. The original light bulbs are not secured very well. Oh, if you do this mod, make sure the light sockets are high quality.

I am installing the solid red lights as brake lights on my race car. I have 2 mounted on each 911R backing for a total of 4 brake lights.

Looked at the LED lights on the link and they look fine for my use if there is enough output from the bulbs to work as brake lights. The lights have a definition of Total Luminous Flux / Single LED Intensity. The 3 LED bulbs are rated at 33 lm and the 6 led bulbs are rated at 66 lm.

On the all red lights the spacing for the bulbs is 37mm making these the correct length.

Are these bulbs bright enough to use as brake lights bulbs? I would get the 6 led bulbs as they are only $1 more.

Thanks
