I have just noticed that my brake lights are not working so I checked the fuse box. The fuse was bad - I replaced it and it blew as soon as I applied the brake. How do you trouble shoot a problem like this?
Could this have anything to do with my engine quiting last week? I thought I had solved that problem with the new DME relay. Thanks!!! ------------------ 1984 911 Targa 1986 911 Coupe |

see if you have a single filament bulb in one of the brakelight sockets, which are double filament. they will go in. in spite of the staggered slots. otherwise, wiring in the taillight housings may be mixed up.

John,
The brake lights were working 10 days ago when I had the car inspected. Thanks, Paul ------------------ 1984 911 Targa 1986 911 Coupe |

I am minus one rear taillight for running lights and brake lights because of a bad ground/short somewhere.
Fried the wire from the fuse box to the headlight switch... Too lazy so far to fix it. Basically look for damaged wires. Sucks! ------------------ Adrian Pillow 1979 911 SC 1966 VW Microbus PCA - Peachstate Region |

Your best solution may be to remove both tail-lamp assemblies from the car and clean thoroughly ... all wiring, connectors, and sockets for the lamps. Plenty of water and mud get splashed up in that area, and with age, some will eventually seep into places where damage will cause inopperative lamps or blown fuses!

Thanks Warren,
I will try that. I imagine that is the most likely place for a short. I will keep you posted. ------------------ Paul 1984 911 Targa 1986 911 Coupe |

The wires, connectors and bulbs in the tail light assembly check out OK. What do I do next?

![]() Hello Try your brakes without bulbs. If the fuse blows again then remove the rubber connectors for the taillights inside the rear enginbay corners. Still blowing then it must be a problem at the switches. 84 ? Did it has the 3rd brake light allready ? Grüsse ![]() |

Roland, the 3rd brake light wasn't added until '86. I am adding one onto my '84.
Blizzard, obviously the 3rd brake light was added aftermarket. How was it wired up, and do you have a tale on the car? Just curious ------------------ Ted Stringer nuke3@juno.com '84 911 Targa aka pocketrocket |
