How to fasten rearview mirror socket?

Because my DAS rollbar obscures vision to the rear somewhat. I want to remount my rearview mirror from the top of the windshield to near the bottom, to better see under the bar. (I already turned the mirror 180 degrees on its socket, which helps a little but not enough.)

Two questions: what glues the little metal mirror socket to the inside of the windshield glass? The mount I got from Porsche is milled-bare metal, so there must be some kind of special metal-to-glass glue that windshield people use. I assumed that it might just be double-sided tape of some sort, but it's not, which leads to the second question:

How do you get the old mount off the glass? I though I could just slip a single-ednge razor under there and pop it loose, but whatever that stuff is that's holding it to the glass, it's like iron.

The special mirror glue is available at Pep Boys and NAPA. To remove the mirror mount you can do what I did. I was removing my helmet and I gave the mirror a wack by accident, came right off. :-)

I've done this a couple times using a putty knife. I haven't cracked a windshield yet.

Generally, you can find special rear view mirror adhesive at you local auto parts store. I used this in the past and it works OK. Thie mirror fell off a couple time, however.
When I bought a replacement mirror it came with a tube of clear silicon adhesive. The silicon has held up fine.

you might consider leaving the small round metal mount alone and just attach another one below it. the factory ones were real well glued and often the glass breaks trying to get them off.

I agree with leaving the original where it's at, and installing a 2nd one where you need it. On my mirror (for the 73 and 75), I affixed the mount not with glue, but with the double sided piece of tape (in the shape of the mount) you get from the dealer. Seems like that's a less messy alternative for installing the mirror mount than using glue. -Doug

Anybody remember those mirror that were cool in the 80's - the ones that went accross the top of the windshiled and connected (I think) to the sun visor mounts? The mirrors were louvered.

Can those still be bought? Does it work on a 911? Seems it would be "period correct" for my SC which is currently sans rear view mirror.

Those were called Wink Mirrors. I still see them around but I don't know if they still make them. They are used in NASCAR. I think there were several law suits from people being lacerted by the mirrors in an accident. I recall hearing a tale of some guy getting ear cut off.

Thanks, people. I will take the advice of JW et al to leave the original mount alone, and I'll look for the proper glue for the second mount.

Saw one of the across-the-car "louvered" mirrors in a 911 at a Lime Rock DE just last week, by the way. Guy had both ears.
