Porsche doesn't want us to use E10 fuel

I found this posted over on RennlistClassic News - Classic News & Events - Porsche Classic - Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG

Basically, if you have a car built prior to 1998, find an alternative fuel - easier said than done.

I haven't really thought about this. What are the alternatives?

Funny, my 1988 manual says you CAN run on E85. No more than 10% ethanol.

This website lists stations with non-ethanol fuel. Appears there is an Android app as well.

Find ethanol free gas near you!

I can find ethanol free fuel around here but no one can get anything other than 89. Most places had access to 89 and 93 then last spring the 93 dried up around here. I talked to a couple of stations owners who told me they sell/sold all the ethanol free (at a $.20 premium) they could buy, but it was getting harder and harder to source.

I haven't read what the guys over on rennlist are saying, but did you even read the article in the link you posted? I don't know anybody who pumps anything but super unleaded in their Porsche. If you can't afford the gas, don't buy the car. All the local gas stations around here have super unleaded 98 RON E5 fuel.

It's a bit confusing. First it says not to run on E10 regular or unleaded. Then it says don't use E10.

Octane rating aside, are they saying 10% Ethanol is okay or not? "These vehicles may not be run on E10 fuel" Does 98 in Europe contain Ethanol?

The only thing I put in my car is Super Unleaded - 91 with 10% Ethanol, we don't have any other choices here.

In Oregon, all gasoline is mandated as E10, with exceptions for boats, and cars older than 25 years. So I can legally get ethanol-free for my Carrera, if I can find one of the very few stations that sell it. And it generally runs about $1/gal more than Premium E10.

I just use Chevron Super in my modded '73.5 - no problems yet. The worst problems are with things that sit for long periods - and esp. if they sit in the water, like boats.

I do use an additive and race gas over the winter, tho.

BTW - rubber fuel hoses need to be replaced periodically - when you do, use an Et-OH rated hose. IIRC, SAE J30R7 will do it for carbs; J30R9 for FI systems.

I started a fuel hose thread in OT and one person in the field posted a long text section he got from a co-worker.

Is the E10 really a problem? Did anybody experience damage to the fuel system that can directly be connected the the E10 gasoline. After resting in the garage for 16 years my 50,000 miles 1979 SC runs fine with regular Chevron. And I still have the original fuel system.

You cant buy gas in the state of Pa without Ethanol. I run Stabile Ethanol treatment in my car all year round. I run it in my Harley and other toys. Ethanol is the devil.

There is a website that shows Ethanol free gas stations. Sorry don't remember the name but the closest to me was an hour away so it didn't help. Ditto on the Stabil ethanol treatment. There is also a marine Stabil that fights Ethanol. I've run Stabil year round in my bikes, other cars that set a lot and tractors and lawnmowers. They always start and run well, even the ones that set all winter. Plugs never foul.....no problems at all.
No I don't work for Stabil LOL.
Motorcyclists and Hot Rodders and boaters have the same problems. The AMA and SEMA is working on lobbying for a solution. Send them a few bucks for support.

If you have old rubber fuel lines, or let your tank sit for extended periods, or your car sites for long times it can cause issues. This is not new. For MOST of the US, there is an ethanol blend. 10% is the norm. Not until about 2005 did automakers upgrade their fuel systems to account for E15 blends.

Everyone wants Ethanol OUT of their fuel.. except for ethanol producers and "greenies"

Eth gas is the dumbest response to oil issues imaginable. You cannot grow enough corn to make a diff you just drive up food prices. Even the green Gorical says he was wrong about Eth Fuels.
The only idiots that support it are thinking is Fed subsidies and grow corn.
It lowers the effectiveness of dino fuel and neg impacts the vehicles it is used in.
Sorry abt the rant.

the local guy used to sell ethanol free - got it out of canada for 10cents a gallon more.. he stopped and i asked him why.. his cost was going to be $1 per gallon more than with ethanol. no one in my area other than me would likely spend a buck a gallon more.

Yes ethanol is evil, but ethanol has been added to fuel for a long time (its just been mandated probably because of the bloody corn lobby). I have run it fine in my 95, 82 and 83 911's no problem. I do keep a close eye on the rubber fuel lines because they will get spongy if they are affected by the ethanol. The consensus of my godfather (whose been in the service business for a long time) is that 10% is small enough that its going to take a long time to affect hoses, and he also told me that anything after 1980 is supposed to be using ethanol safe lines (I don;'t know if this is true, so don't flame me..i'm just relaying the info I have from a wrench whom i trust).

E0 is everywhere here in Charleston - all grades too. At 10 more cents per gallon I have no problem using it in every car I own. And I swear I get much better mileage - tank seems to last forever.

Well, I just had to get the Webers on my car rebuilt (as to all the gaskets and diaphragms) less than one year after they were first rebuilt. With the diaphragms in particular the polymer used had become too soft to function correctly.

Jim thinks the E-10 affected the diaphragms in his Webers. That is bad news indeed! How then would E-10 affect CIS systems? The tunnel fuel lines are hard plastic or metal. But they do have soft rubber extensions. Did anybody have problems with those?
