Thread size for shift knob?

Anyone know what the thread for the shifter knob is. Want to make a custom shift knob but don't want to loosen the old one until the new one is ready.

Kinda surprised it doesn't pop right up in a search...

Mine is not threaded, it's on with a crush sleeve.

On the 915 gearbox it is a crush sleeve inside the knob. You have to tap it up with a block of wood. When you slide it back on be careful that the sleeve is in the correct position inside the knob, (not all the way to the bottom) or the knob will split.

Is the G50 different? I thought I remembered a thread on it when I changed knobs a decade or so ago.

Yes the G50 knob is held onto the shift lever with an allen head screw. Thread size is M8 x 1.25. Original bolt length is 45mm. Most of it is shank- maybe ~10mm-20mm is threaded?

yes the G50 has a threaded bolt that is accessed under the "shift pattern piece" on top. I just took off the original and found a metric bolt at the hardware with same thread and size, cut it off and epoxied it in my custom shift knob.

If you tap the new knob, there is no need to epoxy anything into it. Just screw it on with approx. 2" of M8 threaded rod (or bolt with head cut off). I've turned a few wooden ones, and they turned (pun intended) out very nice.

I'll probably put a threaded tube up inside it so I can put a rod on it to turn it with and then put in a shorter threaded section for installation.
