High Rev's/Unwanted acceleration

Hi all..

New to the Forum but I've been monitoring for several years now with many great lessons learned here.

I have a 1985 911 Carrera---in the past year I've put a new Clutch, new Transmission, engine sensors, on and on and on and I still love my car!

Last night I was driving and as I took my foot off the accelerator the pedal actually went towards the floor and the car sped up. When I instictively took it out of gear the engine reved very high than settled back to idle? Ok so I was shocked and it only happended once but any ideas here? I was not using the cruise control (never do) but it almost felt like it may have had something to do with it??? IDK??

Any thoughts, ideas, where to start?

Thanks

Off the top of my head I am thinking: Throttle return spring broken. But I don't know where that would be located, in the engine bay? I would have to look it up.

I would check the throttle linkage under the car. These have a habit of sticking now and then. Might clean and lube it and see if that remedies the problem.

+1, you will need to clean and lube the portion of the throttle linkage that attaches to your transmission housing on the driver's side. Piece of cake.

make sure that none of your cruise control cables have become dislodged. I had a scary incident similar to yours and I just kept accelerating. What happened is the bracket that holds the cruise control cable fractured and let the cable become dislodged which actually caused my issue. I was able to mcguyver it with a piece of wire that I found on the ground next to my car when it happened. Look above your air cleaner and to the right of your blower motor. This may be your problem. I eventually epoxied it in place and have not had a problem since. Good luck as this scared the $%^& out of me when it happened on a busy freeway.

a couple of zip ties keeps the cruise cable plastic block in the bracket. also see if the cable sheath comes out of the plastic block. either one can hang the throttle.

I dumped my cruise unit long ago, it was a nice weight saver for some thing I never used. IF you don't use it I would advise considering the same. The motor is a solid chunk and weighs quite a bit.

Regards
Dave

+1 cruise control. it's really easy to bump the cruise control lever without intent.

The apparent speed up issue would seem to point me in the direction of the carpet pad binding/pushing on the gas!

I don't think it would be the spring as it accelerated. There may possibly be interference in the tunnel. Of maybe at the pedal cluster. Ie when pushing in the clutch or brake pedal the shaft rotates and turns the throttle bell.

Something like a paddle pop stick , rubbish etc
