what gauge wires????
Can someone please tell me what gauge wires are used in my 1970 911?
I know we have bigger red, yellow, and brown. Then there are smaller wires used for non power apps like gauges. Thanks Frank |

Don't know the answer to your question as they used many sizes. The colors are not size related but are related to the DIN Code for their function.

I think you should be safe with AWG14 or AWG16 from my experince with general electronics. Any objections out there?

Wire sizes run from AWG20 up to larger than AWG10. It depends on the electrical loads on the wire. AWG16 will take around 13 amps which is a pretty good load. Reds carry power, browns grounds. Other wires also carry power for specific purposes and are generally smaller than AWG16. All that said, your '70 probably has smaller wires only a few places, like radio power and sensors, since there weren't many electronics in the car back then.

aren't the wire sizes given on the schematics?

Totally, I mean totally, depends on the application in the car

Every circuit in your car has an engineered limit on current. Every electrical component has a "maximum load".
Each component needs a specific size wire to carry that load. Most wiring will be 16 gauge but circuits like the wiring to the starter will be considerably larger. You can't guess at this stuff. You need to investigate what is required for each circuit. There is no general answer. |

Wire Gauge.

The guys are correct...and by all means PLEASE fuse the circuits correctly!
I have seen AWG18 circuits where the fuse is 25 AMPS...so I think the idea was for the wire to burn up and melt...thus saving the fuse! Bob

Wire sizes.........
If you can find a copy of the Porsche wiring schematic it will tell you the wire sizes. The info will be metric so you will need a conversion chart to get back to "gauge" size (12 gauge, 14 gauge, etc.).

I have the '70 wiring diagram in front of me, and it has no indication of wire gauge. It's not in the workshop manual or PET. I'm not sure it's available. You will just have to determine/measure what you have and match it everywhere you need to patch in new wire.

Wire size is also dependant on length (to load and back). So, you need to know current and length. There is also a component that theoretically addresses duration. For instance, an intermitant use starter cable can be somewhat smaller than the same current/length load under continuous use.
Certainly best to get the info from the source.
