I asked many of the same questions during my quest, and settled on a G50 (non-turbo) '88 Carrera 3.2 and have not regretted it. More than one person with 911 experience told me that in addition to the added maintenance concerns of the turbo, there was a more basic safety concern of cornering and handling of a car with that weight distribution and turbo lag.

All good points, thank you. I had a manual passat with a 1.8 turbo and a lebaron 2.2 turbo. I know I'm no supposed to have one from experience

In terms of power I will say this,
There are many people who think they need 800HP and they will go out an buy a mustang with just that. They will then realize that the car goes through turns like the 80 year old wooden keel boat I sail on. Chances are you are a normal guy who will be driving this car for fun on the back roads by your house. Much like myself this is the most common market for these kinds of cars from what I have seen. I like to call it Urban Rally Racing, or making the best of whats around you. To accomplish this an SC or Carrera is perfect. They have enough power to be thrilling but not to so much that you are getting horrible gas mileage or waking up every one when you start the car. I find my 180HP to have all the thrills and spills I need for what I do. I dont track my car and although I drive fast I am not going nuts. As every one here is saying drive the cars and see, you will most likely find that they are great fun and all that extra power is unneeded for most cases. I drove a 924s back in high school I payed 500 in parts to get it running (the car was free) and even the modest 120HP, or what was left of it, was more than I needed and was a great fun little car to drive. As for the turbos, I would stay away. Not only are they our of your price range, but I like to play by the rule of, more moving parts = more to go wrong. The turbos are simply more complicated and thus more prone to issues. They are also harder to work on which can make even routine maintained a costly issue. I picked up my SC not to long ago for only 9K in really good shape. Recently rebuilt motor and decent interior. Have patience and you will find what you like. Regards Dave
