Introduction to my project

Hi everyone,
Since I have been admiring all the projects on this site for a while now I thought I would share what I've been up to.
I got the car well over a year ago and had no clue where to start. I'm still lost but have decided to continue on working toward my ever changing mental image of what i want the car to be when its done. So far I have stripped the car to bare metal and had it epoxy primed. Collected full sc suspension then media blasted and powder coated everything (looks great), rebuilt carrera brakes, raised spindles to allow for 16" wheels and much more.
Now I'm in the process of repairing all the rust and welding flares as well as installing a new horse shoe pan.
I will add more pictures as progress continues.

Nice looking project. Wow - it's a crazy amount of work to get it stripped down to a shell.

What year did it start out as, and what else do you plan on doing?

oldgunner 02-17-2012 04:55 PM

It started life as a 70T. My goal to is to end up as a lightweight hot rod, not really following any specific model constraints just what I think is cool. I have a 2.4 and a 901 to put in for now.

Good start on the project.....................keep posting.

Welcome aboard oldgunner. You have made tons more progress than I have on mine. Still trying to get it to bare metal. Good job! Keep it up.

Jealous! I wish I would have started with a bare shell. Lightweight Hotrod? Sounds like my kind of car:D Sub'd.

One place to start is by asking yourself, what kind of additional bracing, stitch welding etc do I need/want/desire now while everything is accessible....but maybe none at all! I just simple seam welded the laterals up front and added a strut bar from TRE.

This would be the extreme...Quasi ST

This is just plain cool --> Fraise ST built by TRE

RWebb 02-18-2012 12:33 PM

stiffen that puppy up while you have it stripped bare - Dave @ TRE has done this & posted about it on here

oldgunner 02-18-2012 01:58 PM

I will be stiffening the tub soon. The two links referenced by Combatic have given me lots of work to do. They are two beautiful cars.

Welcome to the jungle!....Off to a great start. Don't loose the mojo. These projects take time, patience, and $$$$$$$$$$$$. Sounds like you have a realalistic goal in mind, and will be a Killer car when you get it done. Thanks for the look, and keep us all posted.

How much do you think a bare shell weighs? Appears you're able to spin this one around pretty freely....

You are well on your way! Welding up your the heater vents and gas tank hole in the fender? Now we know you are serious =) What did you coat your small part with? (hubs, steering rack, bracks etc )

oldgunner 02-23-2012 07:57 PM

I powder coated all the parts battle ship gray this summer. I wasn't sure if baking the rack was a good idea or not so I tried it. It still turns smoothly by hand so I'm thinking its ok, time will tell.

I ran out of wire today or I would have finished welding up the block off panels.

I decided to remove the center support rail. Instead I will use a piece of aluminum and roll some beads into it for rigidity.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1331347939.jpg

Very cool project - thanks for sharing! Not a bad time to raise your spindles if you envision a lowered front end.

The rear shock crossmember lookspretty pitted. Will you evenutally replace?

flares

Just finished adding the flares and got them ground down late this week. I also flared the steel rear bumpers to match and will take some better pictures soon. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1346555741.jpg

bavaria911 09-01-2012 07:24 PM

Nice work. Having that great facility really helps, I'm sure. The 1970 tube looks like a rust free start.
Keep the pics coming.

Progress report

Since the last time I posted any pics I have managed to borrow a friends JDsquared tubing bender and experience to put in the roll bar. It took about a day with lots of help but the finished product turned out really nice. The rear parcel shelf is finished and the tub has been stitch welded front to back.

Pan is also completed, fuchs have been redone and all bearings are packed set in place.

Now I'm working on the panel fit as you can see. Any color suggestions are welcomed. My top choices right now are Slate gray, olive, and leaf green.

I'll try to get some more pictures of the bright work that I'm polishing
