Which After market stereo for my 964?

What is everyones experience with after market radios?

Here is my criteria,

1st under $150
2nd must have good fm and am reception
3rd would like ipod/ usb connection but not a must
4th will not be using an AMP just the internal amp on the deck
5th must not look like boy racer system

The only reason why I am looking is the PO removed the original

Was looking at sony explode, alpine and a few others

Many inexpensive new head units are likely to have the "boy racer" look you don't want.

+1 on Crutchfield
They have many nice people that you can call and talk to.

If you don't like anything new, find a nice used one.

Buy a used primary muffler delete pipe and roll down your windows. The volume knob is under your right foot! Concert for six cylinders!

Seriously, why on earth will anyone think of having a stereo in an air cooled 911? It's the worst place on earth to listen to music, and the best place on earth to listen to the car itself!

Real sports cars don't have stereo!

You are preaching to the choir did you see my signature?

I am going to use this car as a daily driver and deal with louder six cylinders all the time

Vdo

I found a VDO stereo for my car. I got it partly because of the make and the fact that it doesn't (imo) look too much out of place.

Fully agree with Tippy on the Sony Xplode. In high school I took advantage of the Fast & Furious high school teenager crowd and installed units for people. Hey it got me money for my first car. It got to the point where I refused to install Sony Xplode crap because they were going out on customers (aka... XPLODING! as I called it) and they were blaming me. I told them its the unit and has nothing to do with my install, so I just started to refuse the work if they wanted me to install that crap.

Here's a used one from Rothsport Racing (who deserves our support IMO) that fits your budget and will look at home in the car (IMO again):

Blaupunkt Denver CD147 Tuner/ CD Player | eBay

It will likely sound far better than an el-cheapo unit.

Blaupunkt was the original supplier for many 911s, they just look right to me. ebay has many offered, maybe upgrade to a cd unit, some are well under $150

Bought one brand new for my turbo it sat in a box for a year before it was installed . Put it in the car 1 month later it worked great for 1 month then the back lights burned out. Called crutchfield and they could not do anything for me but say sorry so thats my blaupunkt and crutchfield story

I have an old school Eclipse CD player in there now. very high quality back in the day but it's going to a nice 4 channel amp that I have bridged into just 2 channels for a pair of MB Quart 6.5" speakers in the door. It actually sounds really good but the Eclipse is starting to cut out badly at lower volumes, CD player skips badly (stiff suspension) and has no iphone/ipod/bluetooth capability at all. I'd really like to be able to just pop in one of my ipods or iphones and listen to that. Hands free phone would be nice too. Eclipse does not seem to sell simple car stereo/cd players...all I can find is full blown navigation systems which I don't need or want.
