CA smog question
Question...I have a 1987 911 with a stock 3.2 and around 160000 miles on the engine, Topend redone at 110000.
Due for smog in 2013. Question regarding the NO (PPM) measurements. As you can see the CA standards are getting tougher in that department. My 911 is also gaining points there. What can I do to get this number down in the future as I feel this will be where I fail. Is that number the one for the NO(PPM) directly related to my cat? Will a new CA cat lower this number? First test from 2008 the second from 2011. All my other measurements look good though. Thanks Brad F ![]() ![]() |

Hi

Its been my experience that high NO means your engine is running too hot in the combustion chambers. This can be caused by a vacuum leak of some sorts.
Check all your vacuum hoses and your intake runner gaskets.

what someone should do is sue CARB for lowering the cutpoints - if all here would send in $100 we could probably get a good lawyer for a period of time

"Its been my experience that high NO means your engine is running too hot in the combustion chambers."
And/or too much ignition timing advance, e.g. a so-called 'performance' chip.

Just had a friends '87 fail for NO. A tune up with new cap/rotor, plugs, valve adjust and oil change didn't help.
A new Cat. solved the problem. His car is 150k+ miles. The other smog numbers were ok. The new Cat. really cleaned everything up. Super low #s across the board. Cooper |

I had a same problem about a month ago. NO way to high. My ignition timing was out of spec(to advanced). Once the timing was set up properly, i passed..even without O2 beign connected.
I would start with the cheap stuff, ignition timing , tune up, check for vacumm leaks, then move on to cats.. Good Luck! |
