You desert rats just don't realize how lucky you are. Even cars that look decent in the rust belt have nothing up on yours when stripped naked. Enjoying the thread and progress. Nice story to boot.

Looking good. Very motivating.

Day 47: Today I was able to spray the final layer of the 3M undercoating on the floorpan! So excited that I am done with that!!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347153184.jpg Tomorrow I will be prepping the rear wheel wells to go to the media blaster. The space in the wheel wells is tight and I don't think that I can get my grinder in there sufficiently to deal will all of the rust. I figure since I am only doing this once I might as well do it right! Here are a few pics of what the rust looks like. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347153295.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347153324.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347153357.jpg |
^^^ I have rust (surface, I hope) in all the same places. Is there any way you could spot blast it? You're right though, better to nip it in the bud now.
By the way, has your dash cap arrived yet? How does it look? Post a picture of it? Thanks!!! |
I could spot blast some of the areas but I could not get them all. In addition I will have the blaster get the hinge attachment areas and the front where the vin plate goes as that area would be a pain to do with a grinder.
Here are some pictures of the dash cap. It won't be as nice as a real dash but I think it is just the ticket for 8% of the price of a new one http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347214880.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347214894.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347214908.jpg |
looks pretty good in the pics!
|
Agreed... It looks great in the pics! How thick is it?
|
It is very thin plastic and is very flimsy.
|
wouldn't worry with some packing if needed for a good fit it will be fine, looks good from here!
|
Looks good to me also. Where did you get it, mine is in need of one too?
|
I got it from Automotion. It is going to be an interesting install because I randomly have a 68 two piece dash in my car instead of a one piece 69 dash.
|
Does anyone know what type of seal I need to order for the chrome at the bottom of the popout windows? When I removed them I found a putty like substance that was placed in two lines on either side of the spacers. What is this putty and where can I get it? Today I placed one of my last orders from Pelican except for carpet and it included the following:
Rear window seal Headliner clips Rubber ends for headliner bars Seal for air intake box Fender seal Torsion tube cover seals I think I have almost everything stockpiled for the reassembly!!:):):D |

Thanks Daddy Glenn! I was over on your thread earlier today and I must say your car is looking great. You have made some amazing progress:)

Was cruising around youtube last night and found this.
Steve McQueens Le Mans Porsche Auction - YouTube Very inspirational and I am positive that slate grey is the right color for the Rat. I guess the only differences are that mine is a T not an S, there is no AC in the Rat, I am not going to have a radio, chrome wheel well trim, or front bumperettes, and the Rat is one year older. Also, I am not a cool baddass, just a nerdy engineering professor;) I also watched this series (Made by Hand) which I think every Porsche enthusiast needs to see Made By Hand - Part 1 of 5 - YouTube Made By Hand - Part 2 of 5 - YouTube Made By Hand - Part 3 of 5 - YouTube Made By Hand - Part 4 of 5 - YouTube Made By Hand - Part 5 of 5 - YouTube |

Kristoph,
For your strip caulk, go down to the nearest place that sells metal roofing materials. You can buy rolls of this designed to be placed under the overlapping roofing joints. It will be a flat ribbon about 12mm wide, and 3mm thick. If you need thicker, just apply extra layers. This material is not as soft as the 3M automotive strip caulk, and is very close to what Porsche used. It will flow under pressure, but tends to retain its shape and is very sticky. The 3M strip caulk is too soft and does not seal all that well. As always, your work on the rat looks great. DG |
