Stripping and removing rust from gas tank. I made sure to blow out the fumes with my compressor and then run the car with a hose from the exhaust into the tank while grinding. Day 13/14 continued: Stripping doors and hood
Both the hood and the doors are at the body shop right now for work. My welding skills are fairly rudimentary so I didn't want to warp the doors and the hood. I just finished cleaning the inside of my fuel tank and getting ready to paint the exterior. Did you spray the tank with 3m undercoating first then paint over it with gray paint. I thought you could not paint over undercoating. What type of paint did you use? Great project, really enjoy your documentation.

Thanks, glad you are enjoying it! First, I got rid of the factory schutz in questionable areas where it had cracked or had any rust on it. This ended up being most of the tank. The worst part was the seam where the two tank halves are joined together. Once I had the schutz off I did wire wheel and ospho (overnight) multiple times to get down to clean shiny metal. I also used the blaster intermittently during this process. Once I had it down to bare metal I did one more application of ospho and let it sit for about an hour. The trick to ospho is that you need to do several applications overnight to really get at the rust. The last application of ospho is to create a zinc coating similar to what DX 520 from PPG does. After about an hour for the last application of ospho I wiped everything off with a towel and let the tank dry. The next step was two coats of PPG DP 40 epoxy primer applied with a brush (drying times are listed on their spec sheets). The final step was to spray three coats of the 3M undercoating (you can get this from Autozone etc) on the tank. Good luck and make sure to run a hose from your running car exhaust to your tank as the fumes from gas in the tank can blow up the tank |

As everyone on this forum knows, half the fun is replacing stuff when it breaks or wears out. I don't mean to sound rude to some of the concours people (or baseball card people) but I just don't get it. It reminds me of my childhood when the neighbor kids collected all these amazing baseball cards and put them in special cases and were not even allowed to touch them. They moved the cards around with tweezers and were always showing off that they had this card or that card to feel special and important. They were always so sad when they got a card through the mail that had a bent corner or a tiny little scuff that made the card less valuable. The book they used to look up the values was also quite amusing. Instead of playing with baseball cards I just played baseball or soccer in the cul de sac in front of our house and broke the requisite number of windows, gutters, and garage doors ;). There was also a group of kids that collected action figures and never took them out of the package! I think having a poor concours P-car is similar to having some GI Joe languishing in a plastic package. Neither one can kick ass like they were meant to! |
Thanks, It sounds like I'm doing exactly the same thing you're doing with the tank. First I cleaned the inside of the tank, including the plastic swirl pot (I don't think you have one of these) I had to cut a hole in the top of my tank to remove the top of the swirl pot and clean everything out. I then fabricated a stainless steel access plate to cover up the hole. Once I had everything cleaned out I coated the inside with Ospho and let it dry.
I was confused with your photos, it looks like the gray paint is the primer and black is the 3M undercoating? I tried finding gray undercoating but didn't have much luck so I used Black 3m undercoating too. I guess the concours police will delete a few points for unoriginal fuel tank color. |
