Gauge bezel removal tool,..got pic?

(a cross-post from R/L):

Has anyone a pic of the tool that's used to remove the instrument gauge bezel? (Please, spare me the pics of screwdrivers and such.......!)

Just curious as to what the shops use.

Thanks!

Doyle

I wonder if something like a piston ring compressor would work. Seems like you just need something to wrap around the guage that you could then tap gently on. Of course holding the gauge in place while working on it is probably the most difficult part.

Could it be that the gauge repair shops use some kind of a lathe arrangement where they clamp the meter in, rotate it slowly, and use an appropriate stationary metal thorn to slowly open it up in the back, and work the trim ring lose? Then do something in reverse to reattach the trim ring?

81SC removed all of them just by twisting and slowly pulling out. Had one tight screwdriver with tape on edge just to pry out. No bog issue.

I think he means the trim around the gauge not the gauge itself. They're are a ***** to remove.

When it's done carefully (with a little experience) and then replaced into the dash, nobody would ever know...........easy. Done it many times.

...bet that's cheap if even available...
Hell, even in '101 projects' by W., there are notes about how this process works; who cares about a few 'dog bites' that never show though, right?
After a few efforts, even the 'damage' is so minimal as to be considered negligible, and only is seen if you pull the gauge back out! The rubber 'grommet' covers all if done correctly. It's less than a couple hours work to replace the odo gear AND sync the speedo....easy.... I know.

... The first pictures (older speedo) done by me for "Mike" IIRC, and looking at the 2 pix, you can see that it is in MY DASH, and has been tested over a half-mile jaunt with success. Also, you will see that the thing looks like it has never been out of the dash.... all good. The latter, my own, the next pix of the 67K mile thing, equally ok... .....the grill? you tell me. :I $175 shipped....

A craftsman friend had figured out a way to notch a small screwdriver so that pushing it around under the lip of the bezel neatly spread the lip out. But I don't have a picture of that.

The tools shown look more like they are for rolling a new bezel on. Would work for an old one also. What I recall from posts is that VDO won't sell new bezels, at least not to anyone not an instrument shop.

Does anybody sell just the glass? Some of my gauges are plastic. I'd like to swap 'em for glass.
