Question How the oil works in the flat6 Engine!

Hi guys...Just wanted to get some pointers on the dry sump system

On a cold start is there oil in tank..i guessing that if there is it will be very low because of the gravity placing most oil in sump with thermo closed on the tubes.

Can someone explain once the engine has started where the oil goes and what the system is doing where the engine rises to warming temperatures.

also when the revs are up either driving of just revs the throttle is oil moving around the system.

I do know the oil level gauge when revs ,driving or idling does move around from time to times!...cheers.

Thanks Scott...The diagram explains it all!.cheers for this!..much appreciated..also good read on
Grady clay's oil flow engine vs tank.
also i notice some posts here about the restrictor adapters on the cam line...Particularly Henry where he has done a lot of testing in this area.. has anyone installed these new updated adapters and what benefits did you get from this.

Even Pelican parts have them in their catalog.

Slightly off topic question: what sort of pressure would be expected in the oil lines at the front, where they are running through the trombone cooler?

Limited pressure in the front cooler as the oil dumps to the filter and then the tank. There's a pressure relief spring in the external thermostat too (although I've never seen any reference as to what pressure that opens).

This is a good question. The oil is certainly pumped up there and back. There are two short rubber hoses that go from the metal lines to the cooler. On my 85 they were seeping a little, No drips on the floor or anything.

I wanted to add a fan to the cooler for HOT days, and that requires removing the hoses and the cooler. While I had the old hoses off, I just put new ones back on.

So they have enough pressure to leak a little right at the fitting after many years and miles.

It is a real challenge to get them to thread into place and not cross thread them. It took me several tries to get them on straight.

My collection of wrenches needed for the job.

Some years ago someone wrote (on the precursor of Rennlist) about the readings he got when he put a pressure gauge on this line. What I recall was that the pressure was much higher than you would expect for a pipe which eventually opens, at full diameter, into what amounts to the atmosphere (the sump tank, which vents to the atmosphere). To be safe, one ought to use lines and fittings able to handle 90 psi or more.

It came on the car from the factory.

The foam seal is a new replacement along with the new hoses.

The pressure relief valve and the safety valve are both on the output oil pump circuit, not pictured correctly in first pix.

The first diagram has both the pressure relief valve and the safety valve on the pressure side of the pump.

Had one of the short oil cooler pipes completely let go on a dual carraigeway not long after I had my car, luckily I could feel the floor below me getting rather warm so I quickly dipped the clutch and pulled off into a side road, got out of the car to witness the entire drivers side dripping in oil, called out the breakdown recovery to get it home, I was rather worried that so much oil being lost that there may have been some internal damage, however; after installing two new hoses, new oil and filter, the car started up, and was fine; so a message of warning, if your car has the original pipes, or look to be damaged or leaking, change them as soon as you can, as you can never tell when they are going to let go!

Your hoses are diff to the ones I received... mine are rubber... and stiff as boards... I think the fabric covered ones are a little more flexible.
I'm planning to cut the crimps off mine, use the 4 fittings, and get some custom hose and clamps for my setup.

Due to my wide front tyres, on full lock they rub the factory style rock guard, so I'll have to get some wire screen to make my own.
