Building a Spyder from scratch

While posting at some of the 550 Spyder forums with my newbie interest, Dr. Edward DeMayo sent me photographs via snail mail of his ground up spyder project.

It is built on a double box frame chassis and will be powered by an SC motor...stopped with Wilwood brakes...the transaxles is stock but with the diff flipped over...it is going to be a sick car....

Check it out...I guess this is what happens when you mix love of cars, and the skills of a surgeon...what an undertaking!!!

WOW!

Can I have one of those? Please?

I guess I'll have to wait 'til I'm a doctor or something.

Very nice.

Looks like a RSK

That's dedication! My hats off to Dr. DeMayo.

It looks like he's building a RSK.

Did he do the body himself as well? I've never heard of a kit for the RSK Spyder.

Awesome

I hope my kit turns out that well. FYI GP Technical of the UK make a kit for the RSK, and RS60. It uses the Beetle Chassie and guts. AdamsJ and I are building an RS60 kit with 914 engine, and rearend. The body parts for the kit are only $5k. It's been fun so far, and if mine looks half as good as this one, I'll post the pics for all of you pelican heads.

Sorry for getting off topic, but is Dr. DeMayo in Nor.Cal.? I went to a Dr. Edward DeMayo for a severe ankle sprain (more like an ankle mutilation) back in my skateboarding days. If I remember correctly, his office was littered with Porsche racing memorabilia. I think he is also Picabo Street's doctor, unless I am mixing up the numerous orthopedists I've been to.

Small world. I wonder if he'd give me a ride since I helped pay for it.

Chuck, the body kit for the 718 RSK has been available for many, many years - I myself built one about 18 years ago..

As spyderman mentions, GP in the UK still offers a Beetle-based kit but Barry Martin (then trading in the US as BM Enterprises) produced a spaceframe mid-engined version back in the mid- 80's.

Barry's current company (Martin & Walker) in the UK is the set-up which (amongst other things) produces the superb 904 GTS replica seen in Porsche 911 World some months ago.

The RSK/RS 60 replicas can be great fun - even with relatively low-powered 4-cylinder engines - the combination of very little weight (about 7 cwt), low centre of gravity & good aerodynamics producing a highly 'chuckable' 4-wheeled motorbike.

Wow, first this morning there's a Cobra parked out front of work - no, not a replica, the real damn thing!

Now this. All I can say is wow. Wow. Wow.

Probably my only complaint is the wheels...I would've chosen something more classic looking, but kept those FAT tires!

Well, that certainly an impressive project, I wish I had the funds and talent to do something like that. I don't know if this is off topic but have any of you seen what this guy is building in his garage? I found this page while surfing the net http://www3.telus.net/962/ looks like quite an undertaking, amazing what some individuals are doing at home.
