New Here, Insurance question

After 49 years of wanting a Porsche, I just bought a 1987 Carrera Coupe (don't have it yet...soon to be shipped!) and I wanted to get collector car insurance for it. I was wondering if anyone here has had experience, good or bad, with the following companies. I'm not going to ask which is the best as that may open a can of worms, but I would like to hear from you re: customer service, prices, claims, speed of payment, etc.
Heacock, Northeast Classic Car Insurance, Grundy, JC Taylor.

Any other suggested companies are also welcome. I did price out Haggerty, but they are way out of line with some other quotes I've gotten by more than 100%.

Thanks in advance. I'm looking forward to learning from all you guys.
P.S. I wasn't sure which board to put this on; MODS, please move if necessary.

Here in SoCal, the AAA has ended the Collector's car insurance for cars newer than the '71 model year.

According to our AAA rep, the club was paying out $1.28 for each dollar of revenue on these policies.

Fortunately, we are grandfathered in, and our policy for the '86
is $234/YR (full coverage), including 1M/300K liability with no deductibles of any kind, and a replacement value of 25K.

I just paid it.

As for your requirements, the choice is yours.....

You appear to have an exemplary example for that model/year.

Good luck,

Gerry

I have "regular" insurance as well on my '85 Carrera Targa. Same limits as ivangene above. Except $2000 deductible for comp and collision, with $0 glass.

Costs me $285 a year in Arizona, at age 52. And allows me to drive to work anytime if I want (usually drive to work only once a week or so anyway, as I bike to work year-round here in the Valley of the Sun).

I am under the impression that you can get agreed value full coverage, for less that just liability with a normal company.

Have to accept restricted mileage, but at say 5K miles it would do for most of us. And maybe not covering track use. etc.

I haven't found any company that writes these policies here in Hawaii.

Any one here using this type of coverage? Happy with it?

Cheers Richard

I have State Farm for all of our cars, life, and house. They were fantastic when a deer hit it a couple of years ago.

It's worth looking into instead of collector car insurance, depending on your needs.

Leland West looks like a good choice if you are in the states. They offer agreed value, unlimited mileage and appear to have far less restrictions on use compared to other classic car insurance companies.

Unfortunately, they require a locking garage. I am still in an apartment complex in the process of looking for a condo with gated garage. Even with that, I don't believe they would insure it.

Gerry, thank you for the complement on the car. It has 52k miles; I had the PPI done last week..the car is in amazing shape, no rust, no oil leaks (dry as a whistle, the mechanic said), great brakes, tranny, suspension, body, etc.; a few dings here and there.

I pay less than $200 per year in Los Angeles with State Farm for 79SC Targa, as classic second car, 50,000 miles. Mine is garaged though. Isurance coveres everything with $500 deductable for collision. Valued at $16,000 as agreed value. Milage limited to 3,000 per year.

Yes, they have to be garaged. I get mine through Hagerty.

Collector car insurance.......

In the past I have used JC Taylor with favorable results and now have my '80 SC coupe insured by Leland West. The main reason that I went to Leland West was to get a "Stated Value" policy. I had been insuring my Porsche thru State Farm but they only offer an "Agreed Value" policy with some catches. My car falls in the modified category so it runs a bit more than an absolutely stock one would cost. Still, my policy thru Leland West is about $250 per year for everything. The car does have to be garaged and not be for regular drive to work type use, but otherwise is pretty free to use any other time. Good luck with your search!

I'm in the NE and insurance prices here are a bit higher, but I just insured an 86 Carrera through State Farm with something called "stated value" which means I get the car appraised and they will insure the car for that amount, instead book value 482 a year but that's with high liability and low comprehensive deductible.

If you read your policy carefully, you will probably find that State Farm will pay either the "Stated Value" or the "Current Value" whichever is less. That is why I went with a policy from Leland West.

Re: Leland west, I recently checked with them, they told me everyone with a drivers license in my home had to be covered on Porsche. Putting my 17 year old son on car would be around 2500.00 a year. I said he will absolutely never drive the car... Didn't matter... They scream scam in my opinion. I pay 50 bucks a month, full coverage, 250 deductble, I'm 52 .
