Stock '86 Carrera fails CA smog

Well, it finally happened to me as well. Bone stock 911 (I actually put all the stock parts back on the exhaust for the test) failed CA smog. Now I'm a "Gross Polluter" and have to re-smog my '86 Carrera every year.

I F&%$ing HATE California.

I've seen other threads about this, so I'll do a search and start marching down the "spend money until it passes" road.

This is the first time I've thought of selling my beloved car for something newer. It's as if California doesn't want us to own older cars.

I'm so pissed off right now.

Al

Man that blows.

There was a thread about someone not passing smog and a new cat got him to pass with flying colors.
Did you give it a hard run before the test?
Maybe a pelican near you with a fairly new cat can let you borrow it to pass, as an option.

I'll be going in next week for my smog test and will report.

Sorry Al, I'm with you, trying to run a business in this State is F---ed up. No wonder people are leaving.

From stupid gas can laws to taxes on Farts, the only thing California's known for is scams.

Not sure you can fully blame California - your car failed because something on it is broken/not functioning correctly.

A Carrera in proper tune and everything working (cat, all sensors, etc.) passes Cal smog very easily, with lots of room to spare.

(Sorry to hear about the gross polluter label and yearly smogs for you, though!)

How old/new is your CAT? O2 sensor?

+1 here, passed California smog test with my 50,000 miles all stock 1979 SC. Everything seems to work as designed. Never took the CAT off though.

I think the limits have changed and got lower from just a couple years ago.

If swapping the cat is not a viable alternative. Perhaps tweaking the mixture is necessary and a pretest might get you there.

+1 on the "pre-test". That is how I get my 700,000 mile 82 Landcruiser through the CA smog test every other year. Actually my trusted mechanic does it, I leave it up to him. Works every time.

First, thanks for the laughs (esp. the Fart Tax!). Classic middle-school joke (me being immature, it was perfect).

Agree, if it didn't pass, something is wrong. What totally sux is that Californians are not allowed to fix something any longer without being tagged as a "gross polluter?"

I have a series of "free tests" before my garage will charge me for another one. They said to try a few things and bring it back any time for a free re-test, which I'll do.

Thanks again. I still hate CA. Every mountain bike trail I've been riding on for 25 years is now illegal as well. I swear, our "government" won't be happy until I'm 375 pounds worth of couch surfing, sanctioned video game playing corpse.

John Walker has stated that pulling an injector will help our cars pass. I would like to know more about this.

There have been several recent posts on this subject, including mine.

California appears to be deviating from the smog rule that test parameters
cannot exceed M/Y specifications.

Here is our 2011 test, and as per the previous post,
I remove the front oil cooler fan relay for a 230F oil temp prior to test.

And yes, +1 on the fart tax............

Good luck,

Gerry

I just passed my Cal smog test. I went to a local shop that I trust and asked for a pre test that did not count just to see where I was at. He told me it was fine and then did the real test. All I did was make sure the car was in good tune, oil was up and I got the motor really hot before the test. And also I put 40 psi in the rear tires. Passed with about 140,000 miles.

I'd heard that a properly running Carrera is actually a pretty clean burning car. I failed a couple of years ago b/c my bad valve guides had affected the spark plugs, even then I changed plugs, took it back and passed with flying colors...of course I'm in Texas but I think we have stricter emission requirements in Dallas, although this was not technically in Dallas so not sure if that matters.
