What is the cheapest 911 you ever heard of?
What is the cheapest 911 that you ever heard of? I have bought a few very inexpensive ones...
My first 911 was $4700 off this board. FS: 1977 911S 2.7 Widebody Kit I have seen a few sub $1000 projects before, and even the current copy of excellence showcases a $400 car. What deals have you heard about? Post CL ads if you know of any.

in what shape, I have seen some some what complete no engine chassis go for cheap from the 1-3K range. When I was looking I could not find any thing running under 12K ish, except mine which was running with a recent rebuild for 9K hence why I bought it.
Regards Dave

I almost bought a running, driving 77 that was in decent shape for $7k (all brake calipers just rebuilt, tune up, all new ignition system, front mount oil cooler, dash with no cracks, decent seats, engine rebuild in past which likely included stud/case upgrade, front pan just replaced (rust)). one dent in body and paint not great, but all it really needed was tires, a door handle, and couple of minor things. I found my SC for a few $k more and bought it instead because of the 3.0 engine and better brakes.

Mine was $8250. Running 84 Carrera with high miles, but a good service history. Has been rock solid reliable since October as my daily driver.

my '77 was $10.5k 6mo ago.
Runs fine, looks great, gets tons of compliments, but have had a couple of small problems since purchase (mostly coil related) but overall in good condition. Need to do some small maintenance on her soon but overall very happy.

I paid $2,000 for a one owner 1969 a few years ago....Some rust, and bad paint. Didn't run and rumors to have bad transmission. Turned out to be a minor wiring issue and bad shift bushings......

My first 911, and my entry on to this board, was a 1972 911E Targa. Paid $5900 because the guy said that is how much he still owed on the car. Average shape and drove it daily. Believe it or not, 10 years ago a '72 911 was just another old Porsche. I traded it to another member on this board for my '86 Carrera and actually had to give him money!

I think it was in another post here awhile back, I read of someone picking up a 911 for $50 - I believe the situation was a nasty divorce, the wife sold the car for next to nothing as she had to split the proceeds with the ex-hubby and wanted him to get almost nothing for it.
Could be I have the details wrong, but it went something like that. Audi

that's an urban legend that has been around a long time (about corvettes, ferrari, boats, etc.).

In 1974, I bought a 1968 911L soft window Targa for $600 in San Antonio Tx. The car had sat in the Northwood Porsche/Audi service lot for several years, so I asked the service manager what the story was. Seems the car was brought in on the hook after going thru some very deep water in a rain storm and not running. The owner, who was from out of town and on a trip, told the dealer to "go through it" to fix any problems the water had caused and he would return in the future to pick up the car. He never made any further contact with the dealer!! They pulled the motor and completely disassembled it, but with no further contact from the owner, they put all the parts in a huge box.
The car then sat outside till I asked the sevice mgr what they planned to do with it. I suggested an abandoned car sheriff's sale, and admonished him to call me if and when it would take place. One morning he called and said the sale was set for noon that day. I hustled over there and was one of three bidders. The others were a used sports car dealer friend of mine (who had no interest in a project car) and a well known Porsche guy named Bill Jones (the father of Bob Jones of Jones Autowerks in San Antonio). While waiting for the auction to begin, Bill Jones lifted the deck lid and promptly was bitten by a swarm of wasps that had built a nest in the empty engine compartment. So when the auction began, he was a bit woozy. The bidding started at $100, Bill Jones last bid was $500, I bid $600 and the car was mine! To say the wasp venom had clouded Jones's judgment is an understatement! Joy oh joy, I now had a $600 '68 911L soft window Targa project. My joy then became somewhat subdued when upon dragging the car and a big box of parts into my driveway, my wife exclaimed "What the hell are you going to do with that piece of junk!!" The good news was all the parts were in the "big box". Every nut, bolt, screw and spring. I put it all together, refurbed the Targa top, interior, and did a complete bare metal paint job. The paint was all burned out and an ugly green, almost olive drab color, so I changed the color to a metallic blue. I sold the car a couple of years later and the profits became the down payment on a new house. Needless to say, my wife then thought that "piece of junk" I had dragged home turned out quite well. I have often wondered where that car is now. Anyone knowing of a metallic blue '68 911L Targa soft window in the south Texas, please let me know. I have some before and after pics that I will post when I can dig them out.

Bought a non running 77 for 3k. Was dirty, and advertised as having a locked up 2.7. Got it home, and found it had a hydrolocked ( with fuel ) 3.2. Had it running that same weekend, and daily drove it for 1.5 years. Actually cleaned up pretty nice. I kept the motor, and sold the car for its initial purchase price.

I bought a '73 euro T for $900. sold the trans and carbs the next day for $1,000. Still have the tub (for sale). Bought a sc for $1,800 (no running gear). Made back most my money on parts, but I only needed the tub. I missed a '70 for $1,000 a few months ago.

Got my 80 euro.SC for 2k with a suspected clutch problem, which turned out to be missing coupler bushings. Car has 4600 miles, and is running. Only needs a fronthood repaint, and some simple maintainince issues.

I got a '64 356 SC for free- I'm going to say that's about as inexpensive as it gets (unless someone gives you a car and a bag of cash...)
Of course, extenuating circumstances: -It belonged to my best friend's dad- I pestered him for years about it/ -It had been sitting, basically stripped, under a tarp in his swampy Florida backyard, for a decade, which kinda tells you the condition. -It was complete, however, once you went through all the cardboard boxes. It took me four years, but it did get back on the road, and was my daily driver for a while. Sold it 10 years ago to a guy in the UK for about what I had in it ($20K) wish I hadn't- Have seen it change hands twice more since for more than double that. |

Very interesting stories everybody! I was wondering if anybody has picked up a really cheap 911 in the last 1 or 2 years (as several posts indicate that the deals where done several years or decades ago).
There is a guy who recently picked up a complete mid-year for $1000 on Vancouver Island and got it running and is driving it regularly. Seems that deals are still out there.
