Bits on G50 tranny plug

I've been wondering what has been causing a faint metallic whirring sound in my G50 when in gear around 2,500 to 3,000 RPMs. I decided to drain the oil (Mobil 1 75w90 LS) and this was on the plug magnet. The pic is not too clear but it is a very small coil spring, looks like what is often on the circumference of various other seals. Any idea what this is from? I assume this has something to do with the noise but maybe not. BTW it shifts and drives fine, other than the faint metallic whirring.

It looks like the tension spring that goes on the mainshaft seal. I would be concerned when and how it got dis-lodged. Maybe from some previous gearbox work when the mainshaft was installed and caught the edge of the seal??? Any oil leaks from the bellhousing area would be a clue it is not on the seal. By the spring not being on the seal, it may leak enough oil on the clutch disc to ruin it and cause slipping. You may not see enough fluid come out to drip off the case..it just depends on how loose the fit of the sealing surface is to the mainshaft.

I replaced the seals on the tranny when I rebuilt the engine last year but don't recall any issues. It does look like the spring around the seal though. There does seem to be some leaking tranny flued at the "front" of the tranny, near the tunnel. It just shows up on the bottom of the tranny though, not inside and I'm not absolutely sure its tranny fluid b/c I have an oil leak as well. Any way to tell for sure it it's tranny or engine oil? Maybe smell? The Mobil 1 does not seem to have as strong a smell as other tranny fluids I've had. At least not that I can tell.
I've owned the car 10 years and have extensive reciepts from the PO and there does not seem to be any tranny work done, other than a clutch replacement.

If you replaced the seals on the tranny, maybe the spring is from the old mainshaft seal that you removed. If you have oil near the tunnel it may have a bad shift rod seal ..you can replace that with the gearbox in the car.

Sounds like the metallic whine/whirring noise may not be related to this? I had started another thread on the noise but never really determined what was causing the sound.
Update...just dug out the old seal which was replaced in the rebuild...no spring in the groove where I think there should be one. Did not notice it at the time.

When I drop the engine to treat the leaks I may partially disassemble the tranny and check.

Yeah, that piece sure looks like the T/O Guide Tube Seal. Glad to read the whining went away. Was the piece on the magnet, if so it did it's job =)
